Jonesboro is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,563 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Jonesboro was founded on November 8, 1871 by John C. Jones and his wife Martha Jane Whitehead Jones. The town was named for General John C. Jones who fought in the Mexican–American War and became a U.S. Senator from Arkansas after that event. In 1902, Jonesboro became an incorporated town and the first African American to serve as Mayor of Jonesboro when he took office in 1904. The First National Bank of Jonesboro was founded in 1907 by Jens Ludwig von Rohrbaugh and others and grew into one of the largest banks in Arkansas with branches throughout Arkansas and Illinois before it went bankrupt in 1930. In 1923 Coca-Cola began operations at a bottling plant built by local entrepreneur Wirt Hinton on Seminary Street near Broadway Avenue in downtown Jonesboro; this bottling plant continued operation until 1984 when it closed due to competition from Pepsi-Cola's new Bottling Plant #1 (now known as Walmart). According to the 2000 census, there were 4,651 people living within 1 mile (2 km) of downtown Jacksonvilleville where Interstate 20 intersects US Highway 65 north of Jacksonvilleville; within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Jacksonvilleville there were 2,478 people living within 1 mile (2 km) of any other place; within 10 miles (16 km) of anyplace there were 2,363 people living among housing tracts composed primarily outbuildings called "villages." As rural areas collapsed during the Great Recession following World War II due to lack of jobs or affordable housing opportunities outside metropolitan areas--a trend nationally--the number density for these specific types of housing tracts increased significantly inside metropolitan areas such as Jacksonvilleville during this time period because employers could not find employees willing to live closer to their job sites outside an urban area during those difficult economic times without losing their jobs or paychecks entirely

It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Bethany Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jonesboro was founded in 1881 by developers of that name. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and a city in 1960. The Jonesboro Arsenal, built by General John Custer during the American Civil War on land near present-day Jonesboro, was one of the largest artillery installations ever constructed in the United States. The arsenal produced cannons and rifles for Union forces and Confederate troops during the war. The Arsenal closed in 1865 after Confederate General Robert Ewing's army burned down most of it. The Jonesboro area was first settled by the Cherokee in the 17th century. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson and his army invaded Georgia and captured Savannah. Afterward, he ordered General John E. Carr to build a road from Jonesboro to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Carr did so and started what is now known as the Carr Road. In 1827, the United States government founded Fort Smith in Arkansas to protect American settlers from Native Americans. The fort was later renamed Fort Riley after Major-Generalphilip Sheridan who led Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1869, Jeptha Stephens became Arkansas' first governor when he was elected over James Ketchum by one vote of the state legislature. Stephens served two terms before being impeached for bribery and other charges in 1870s. He died shortly after being removed from office on impeachment grounds
