Tommy's Coffee is one of the first coffee shops in Little Rock. It was founded in 1969 by Tommy Smith and his brother, John. The shop served coffee beans from Ethiopia and Kenya. In 1976, Tommy opened a second location in North Little Rock. In 1984, Tommy and his wife, Kathy, opened their third shop in downtown Little Rock. That same year, they began serving pre-packaged coffee made on-site at their stores. By 1990, they had two locations: one in the Pinnacle Center shopping mall and one in the Arkansas State Fairgrounds near the University of Arkansas campus. Tommy's Coffee also became known for its chocolate milk with vanilla ice cream flavor.
Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 21,815 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Little Rock is located on theArkansas River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification: Cfa). The site of present-day Little Rock was first inhabited by Native American people in what is now Pulaski County. The area was part of the British colony of North America during the days when independence from Great Britain was sought. George Rogers Clark, who had fought for independence in Missouri and then as general in Northwest Territory before reaching Arkansas, visited Little Rock on July 18, 1791 while campaigning against France near modern day Fayetteville. He named the place Arkadelphia after his home town of Arlington Virginia. In 1827, David Hogg organized what became known as the First Baptist Church in Little Rock which served as its first meeting hall and primary congregation until it burned down in 1865 due to an accidental fire that started inside one of its members' effects; Hogg rebuilt it and served as its pastor until his death two years later. In 1881, James Gadsden donated land to be used for a public square in downtown Little Rock under the name "Gadsden Square". In 1907–1908, Charles Bowers founded Joplin Globe newspaper chain with offices located primarily outside of Memphis Tennessee across Interstate 40 from Main Street southbound exit #2 off I-40 just east of UNT campus (the Joplin Globe building still stands). Joplin Globe's parent company Southern Pacific Railroad discontinued operations there because they were not successful enough at competing with Hearst Newspapers headquartered nearby on I-40 east side), leaving little hope that any successor could succeed where Southern Pacific did not before them; however local entrepreneur Alonzo Mourning purchased most assets including all but one leased office space within six months thereafter and renamed it "Mourning Media Company" which remains active today (although no longer based at Southern Pacific Railroad HQ). The first written mention of coffee is from an ancient Sumerian poem known as the Epic of Gilgamesh. In this poem, Gilgamesh drinks coffee from a broken pot and experiences a sense of peace and well-being. Coffee was also mentioned in the Bible in the book of Job (Book 4:9).
Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 784 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Little Rock was founded on November 3, 1907 by Means and James Fenton as a farming community named after its founder, George Little Rock. The name change to Little Rock in 1911 when it became the first incorporated town in Pulaski County. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history. When it was founded, Little Rock was an unincorporated community located near what is now downtown Little Rock. In 1907, the town passed through incorporation and changed its name to Little Rock because it became one of the few towns in Pulaski County that did not have to worry about approval from county leaders before starting business operations. The nickname stuck and has been used by the city ever since; however, some residents continue to refer to their hometown as "Rochester" or "Rockville." In 1940, during World War II, local businesses successfully lobbied for military housing developments within the city limits known as "The Pentagon". This area would eventually become home to numerous government agencies and institutions later on in its history including both NASA and White House National Security Council staffs during various administrations of both Ulysses S. Grant and Franklin D. Roosevelt
