Marion is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 984 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Mountain Home, AR-Stroudsburg, PA-East Stroudsburg, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by farmers from Kentucky and Indiana who came to the area to seek new land for growing crops and raising livestock. The Marion post office was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler in Marion was John Witherspoon; he and his family arrived on horseback from Indianapolis on November 15, 1887. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 6 near present-day State Road 47. Witherspoon named the community after his mother's father, General James Wilkinson (1792-1866). In 1901, a schoolhouse became necessary because only one farm had children between the ages of five and eight years old. A second school opened in 1902 using building materials donated by local citizens and money received from sales of Frontier flour products. In 1913, when three other communities were consolidated into one called Pulaski County under then Governor Orville Sprague (1909-1915), Marion became one of those towns with its own government. A post office operated at Marion until it was discontinued on October 16, 1907 due to low mail volume. A general store opened at Marion soon thereafter which functioned as an early branch library until 1926 when it closed because of budget cuts made by then Pulaski County Executive John Hines (1900-1966). A Methodist church also opened at Marion shortly thereafter which served as the town's first fire department from 1912 through 1916; however this service ended when funding for such a endeavor dried up during World War I(). In 1925 a Masonic lodge – Grand Lodge No 9th degree – became active at Marion thanks to contributions from local business people including Fenton Gentry Sr., founder of Gentry Chevrolet dealership near present day Interstate 10 southbound exit ramp 1A/K northbound exit ramp 5B/ Exit 4C off I-10 just east of town limits; Don Easley served as its first president since its establishment. On October 24, 1966 Pulaski County voters passed an election ordinance providing for direct democracy within county government through township meetings instead of traditional polling places where deputies are elected to serve staggered four year terms; this change followed earlier efforts by Hines to reduce corruption within county government following revelations that officials had sold votes obtained illegally during previous elections while they were still serving their terms On December 2nd 1976 Marion voters approved plans submitted by Mayor Larry Treadway (who later served as Republican Party Commissioner for Little Rock) to build more than 50 homes along State Road 6 across from FM 1725 just north of town limits; these homes would be known as "The Village". At about this time another post office reopened located east of US 31 southbound off I-10 next to former KFC restaurant (); this original post office continued operation until it closed on September 3rd 1984 due to low mail volume . Currently there is only an address book left which has been digitized and is available online . On January 26th 2006 MARION residents voted 7 - 0 against making changes proposed by Mayor Treadway that would have given all residents voting rights plus veto power over all ordinances passed without their consent ; these proposals ultimately failed .

In Marion, Arkansas, the history of the town dates back to 1873. The community was founded on a small farm by John A. Ferguson and his wife, Sarah. The first settler in Marion was George W. McCain, who arrived in 1873. In 1899, the town had a population of just over 100 people. By 1909, however, it had grown to more than 1,000 people and became a key stop on the "Arkansas Traveler's Aid Society" road trip that year. The town's growth continued during World War II as soldiers built barracks and stores there. After the war ended in 1945, many new residents moved into Marion from other parts of Arkansas and Missouri because of its good schools and access to jobs in nearby cities. In 2000, Marion's population reached 2,200 people again - making it one of the most populous towns in Pulaski County. Today, Marion is a thriving community with healthy businesses and an active cultural scene that features art exhibitions and music festivals throughout the year. The town also has a strong tradition of civic engagement - including being home to both the Santa Fe Trail Museum and local chamber Orchestra - which helps make it an attractive place to live and work.
The area now known as Marion, Arkansas was first settled by the Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to see the area was a French trader named Jacques Marquette, who traveled through the region in 1795. He noted that there were numerous large trees and high hills in what is now Marion County. The tribe of Watauga had already removed to what is now eastern Tennessee before Marquette's trip, so his observations likely did not reflect local reality. By 1800, white settlers had begun arriving in earnest and by 1810 there were about eighty-five families living in the area. In 1824, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and he issued an executive order granting land to General James K. Polk for a military road connecting Memphis with points eastward. This road would become known as the "Jackson Road". In 1830, General John Custer led an attack against Native American forces near present-day Fort Smith, Arkansas; this event is generally considered to have created support for Indian Removal campaigns waged by Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency. As a result of these events, many white settlers came into contact with Native Americans and their cultures which led to some tension and conflict over land ownership and resource Use among these groups later on in history. In 1840, Presley County was organized from parts of Butler County when those counties were reorganized following Mississippi becoming a state after being disjoined from Alabama following its secession from that state due to slavery issues (see below). During Reconstruction (1865-1913), most violence between black residents of south Mississippi versus whites occurred within Presley County while much more violence took place across all of southern Arkansas during this time period including at Little Rock Central High School where two students died after being pelted with rocks from a car window on December 14th 1969
