The community is located on the south bank of the Arkansas River and directly across from Fort Smith. Its name comes from Marion, Alabama, which was founded by white settlers in 1819. The first post office in Marion was established on October 16, 1871. The first store open for business in town was the Hartshorn Store operated by Fannie Ewing and her husband John Hartshorn. A cotton gin and other Manufacturing businesses were soon erected around town with many families owning businesses including: Wm Bickhart & Sons hardware store operated by James Bickhart; A.F.&M.'s grocery store operated by Fenton Malone; Jno Phelps bakery; Mrs Mears' dress shop; Mrs Winnie Dunham's livery stable; Mr Cummings' sawmill; Phebe Caldwell's flower stand In 1886, three men -- Frank Trotter (a native of Marion), Jesse White (born December 12th 1849), and George Towle (born October 6th 1850) started a flour mill that would become one of Arbuckle County’s most successful enterprises successively grinding corn to make flour until it closed its doors in 1950 due to technological advancements during World War II when all mills were converted into military production plants
In 1872, a group of settlers from Marion, Arkansas started the town. The town was named after General James Fayette Marion who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. In 1903, the town had a population of 106 people. The first post office was established in 1903.
