That year, it annexed what are now parts of North Little Rock and Conway counties; these annexations were done so that large areas within Maumelle would be under one jurisdiction for tax purposes and property taxes would be uniform throughout the county. In 1929, Sauk Rapids Road was completed through Maumelle; this road connected Sauk Rapids, Minnesota with Great Falls, Montana via Maumelle Valley Railroad Depot on the White River north of town. This depot served as a transportation hub for goods coming upriver from Missouri via Great Falls and Sioux City before being transported downriver to Pine Bluff and finally Memphis or St Louis respectively. During World War II, local farmers produced food for thousands of troops living overseas; during war time restrictions on transporting goods made it difficult for these farmers to sell their products locally though importers such as Armour & Co.; however, local grocery stores managed to remain open despite rationing until 1945 when all grocery stores closed due to lack of customers after V-E Day On October 8th 1963 two young girls were raped by nine men at gunpoint while walking across country from Texas into Arkansas; eleven men subsequently confessed to this crime which made national headlines .
