Maumelle is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Maumelle were French traders and fur trappers who set up outposts along the Arkansas River in 1811-12. In 1814, General John Covington established Fort Osage on the west bank of the Arkansas River opposite present day Maumelle. French settlers began arriving in large numbers from Louisiana during the 1830s until the end of Indian Wars in 1846 when all Native Americans were removed from Oklahoma Territory by order of President James K. Polk as part of his Indian Removal policy. In 1839, Captain David Rice established a trading post near present day Maumelle with supplies for local farmers and hunters and also sold goods at a later site called Green Gables which became known as Postville after Captain Rice's wife. In 1840 Major Elisha mathematical Hazard built an adobe house on what is now Court Street in honor of his late father-in-law Colonel Isaac Hazard (1796-1868). On account of its strategic location overlooking both North Little Rock and South Little Rock, this house served as a local courthouse for many years before it was destroyed by fire in 1903. Only one other building remains standing within walking distance of Court Street today: The Old Methodist Church which serve as local history museum since it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The congregation moved to their current place adjacent to Interstate 40 eastbound between FM 1570 and FM 471 about 1906; however some original features still remain such as pews & belfry with stained glass windows dating back to 1914 ]. Lack thereof has not prevented development over time - several businesses have been located here including Bemis Department Store (founded 1886), First National Bank (1890), Phelps Dodge Corporation (1910), Tyson Foods Incorporated (1983) - currently continuing activity at former Postville property across I40 off exit 221A/222A just south of US 421/Arkansas Highway 64 junction near Dunkin' Donuts!
