Paragould, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1875 by white settlers and named for General George Parke Custis after his service as a colonel in the Confederate army. The arrival of railroad tracks forced Paragould to change its name to "Paragould" in 1887. The current name honors General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men who fought against Union forces during the American Civil War. The first store in Paragould opened on Main Street in 1876. A post office was established at Paragould in 1880 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1909. In 1903, an agricultural Implement Manufacturing Company was organized with a factory at what is now downtown Paragould. This company manufactured farm equipment including tractors, hay wagons, harvesters, and combines. In 1916-17 paratroopers from Fort Worth Air National Guard Base participated in World War I while stationed at nearby Fort Smith; they were the first U.S military unit to fight on an international scale against Germany since the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After World War I ended, many soldiers returned home and their families decided to move into the area aroundparadoxically named "Arkansas Post". In 1927-28 Harry Byrd became governor of Arkansas; he appointed Jerald Hite as mayor of Arkadelphia which then became known as "Arkadelphia."
