In 1947, a group of young men from Pine Bluff formed the nucleus of what would become theAir Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AROTC). At that time, there was no military academy in Arkansas and so AROTC was developed as a way for USAF cadets to earn their commission. The first class of AROTC graduates graduated at Lackland AFB in Austin, Texas in 1951. In 1957, an addition to Lackland AFB was built and named after Colonel John P. Hennessey - who had played a key role in developing air combat doctrine during World War II and the Korean War. Colonel Hennessey's Unit 1 School offered students the opportunity to learn how to fly jets and commandsos on American Airlines flying facilities located near Little Rock. This program eventually evolved into known as E-4 Flying Training School (FTS), which opened its doors in 1960 at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. FTS became one of America's most successful ground training programs for pilots and has since been replicated by other service branches worldwide. In 1984, General Accounting Office cited problems with military aviation due to budget cuts as one reason why national security clearances were not being issued to enough high-ranking members of the air force leadership. As a result, Major General James A Hill took over command of Air Combat Command (ACC) from General Donald "Buck" McKeon effective 4 October 1984 until his retirement on 16 December 1985; Hill is considered one of USAAF's most distinguished commanders throughout its history

The unit was founded on November 11, 1941 as the 143rd Fighter Squadron when the United States Army established the 1st Tactical Air Command in Wichita, Kansas. The 143rd FS was initially equipped with P-40 Warhawks and flew missions over Iwo Jima during World War II. In 1947, the143rd FS became part of the 6th Bombardment Wing at Grand Central airfield, Texas and began flying Boeing 707s for transportation to various military installations around the world. In 1958, the squadron became part of Ninth Air Force and served as an instructor base for bombing cadets at Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX. In 1969, after being redesignated an F-4E Phantom II squadron,the squadron moved to Eglin AFB Florida where it remained until 1993 when it relocated back to Arkansas under control of First Lieutenant Colonel Don Nolen USAF (Retired) as Headquarters/Headquarters Squadron - 145th Fighter Wing. As Headquarters/Headquarters Squadron - 145th Fighter Wing our mission is to provide Combat Crew training support for all units of the Arkansas Air National Guard through airmobile detachments located throughout Arkansas; participate in exercises with other Federal agencies; conduct airborne refueling operations; provide communications services for Aerospace Defense Command’s THAAD batteries; provide information technology support for state troopers and law enforcement officers statewide On January 14th 2006 Headquarters/Headquarters Squadron 145 FW changed its name from "Hq Squadrons 145 FW" to "Air National Guard 146FW".
Pine Bluff, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, located on the eastern edge of the high country along theArkansas River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,569. The name Pine Bluff was given to the community by General John C. Fremont in 1868 while he was serving as military governor of Arkansas. The first settlers in what is now Pine Bluff were farmers and their families who arrived from Kentucky around 1825. By 1830 they had built a log cabin on a rise overlooking the river and began to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1836 they organized themselves into a village and named it after General James Kountze, who had fought at Mexican War (1846-48). In 1840 they voted to secede from Pulaski County and form their own county under Governor Thomas J. Pendergast. This action created great controversy among the local people because many felt that Kansas should have been counted as part of Arkansas when Jefferson Davis became president in 1860 because that is where most of the new cotton plantations were being constructed. Despite this opposition, Pine Bluff remained part of Pulaski County until 1907 when it joined with Little Rock to form Little Rock–Pine Bluff Township. In 1861 Lieutenant Colonel James Hance established Fort Smith as an important Confederate supply depot on the north bank of the Arkansas River opposite present-day Pine Bluff. Hance's fort served as an early warning system for Confederate armies moving downstream across what is now Arkansa River National Military Park. Pine Bluff is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Aldine area. The first settlers to Pine Bluff were Captain John Auld and his family who migrated from New York in 1827. They founded what would become the city of Pine Bluff on the banks of the Arkansas River northeast of present-day downtown. The first post office was established in 1834, and by 1840, there were ten businesses operating in town. Pine Bluff became a county seat in 1867 and experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction years (1868-1876). In 1870, it had a population of over 2,000 people and by 1880 it had reached 4,000 residents. After Reconstruction ended in 1880, business slowed due to low population levels and then resumed slowly until World War I when pine bluffs exploded with growth as munitions production increased. It was not until 1925 that Pine Bluff again attained its pre-World War II population size with 3,200 residents according to USGS data; this increase was largely due to international migration into the area caused by wartime prosperity brought about by new oil drilling concessions granted to Tulsa (Oklahoma) businessman George Mitchell within Arkansas’s newly acquired borders following World War I. During World War II (1939-1945), much of the industrial Shayne Manufacturing Company plant on Post Road nearkins Lake came online as military equipment production increased after the United States entered war against Nazi Germany; Shayne products accounted for more than 50% of all US arms exports during that period.
