The Air Force Deployed Gift History Unit is a unique program that has been in operation for over 30 years. This unit allows the public to learn about the history of military aircraft and gifts bestowed upon them by members of the USAF. The unit also allows civilians to interact with these individuals and gain knowledge about their lives and careers within the USAF. The first deployment of this type occurred in 1992 when the Air Force sent two C-130 Hercules planes as a gift to the city of Sherwood, Arkansas. The purpose of this gift was to celebrate its growth as a community and show appreciation for its support during Operation Desert Storm. Since then, there have been many more deployments, both within Arkansas itself and into other states across America. One of the most famous deployments occurred in 2003 when three F-15C Eagles were sent as a gift to RAF Scampton, England. This was in honor of RAF Tornado pilots who had lost their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition, this deployment allowed American citizens living in Great Britain access to some interesting airside features that they would not be able to experience if they resided outside Europe. Other notable deployments include those conducted in 2006 regardingOperation Neptune's Spear; which was an assault against Afghanistan; and 2008's deployment which honored Flight Attendants who took part in Hurricane Katrina victims relief efforts. Additionally, members from throughout Arkansas traveled down to Houston, Texas for AirForce Day celebrations in May of 2009. Throughout all these deployments, it has been important for members from both the local government and citizenry alike to maintain good relations with each other both on site and off site. The first people to live in what is now Sherwood were the Hitt family who settled there in 1872. They were followed by the Smiths in 1881, and then by the Parkinsones in 1903. The post office was established here on November 15, 1865, and remained open until it was discontinued on March 8, 1911. When Arkansas became a state in 1907, Sherwood voted to join as one of its initial counties. It has since grown steadily both temporally and geographically—it annexed two other towns during the mid-20th century: Fort Smith (west of Sherwood) and Fairview (to the east). Today, Sherwood is home to a variety of businesses including two banks; several service companies; four churches; three schools; as well as a detachment from the United States Air Force stationed here for nuclear weapons training purposes. In addition to its many residents, it also features an annual Pumpkin Festival which includes crafts and pumpkin eating contests among various events throughout the day.
