Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Westville, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sherwood was established in 1881 by Reuben and Hannah Sherwood as a log cabin community on the Poteau River. The name "Sherwood" comes from the Shawnee word "sharwoods." The Sherwoods were among the earliest settlers in what is now Pulaski County and built their first home there in 1881. In 1907, they moved to what is today known as Southfield Drive, just east of Sherwood Elementary School. Their home still stands and can be seen from Interstate 40 near mile marker 24N. In 1959, when Pulaski County became Arkansas’s third county, it included all of present-day Pulaski County except for a tiny corner within southern Sheridan County that was annexed by North Little Rock in 1912. That annexation set off an uproar among residents of Sheridan who wanted to keep their own county government separate from that of North Little Rock. A referendum called for the removal of all but two blocks of North Little Rock’s Town Square before November 3rd 1960 – more than three years after Pulaski County had been organized – but only one percent voted to secede from its larger sister county (and less than two years after North LittleRock had annexed much of Sheridan). The remaining residents formed a Committee to Unite Our Towns which succeeded in having the secession resolution passed at a special meeting on November 3rd 1960; however, it never took effect because not enough people lived in Southfield Drive to make it an effective municipality. On January 1st 1961, under pressure from state officials and with no other choice available to them, most sheriffs across Arkansas announced that they would no longer enforce federal law throughout their counties which included Pulaski County. This decision effectively nullified any efforts by local officials to maintain order during what has come be called “the Revolt against Sheriff Crowell” or simply “The Great Sherwood Flops". As result of this policy change many criminals found new opportunities outside sheriff's jurisdictions while also contributing to social unrest which ultimately led to several high-profile police shootings over the next few years culminating with Ferguson Jr.'s death on August 9th 2014

The name of the town was changed to Sherwood on December 2, 1861 because of its location near Fort Smith (now Little Rock). On February 14, 1872, sheriff James L. Nashalty shot and killed two men who had been stealing horses from his ranch in nearby Arkadelphia. This event helped seed the popular legend that Sheriff Nashalty was a Vigilante Lawyer with a Gun
