The town of Siloam Springs, Arkansas was founded in 1881 by two families who were drawn to the area by its fertile soil and natural resources. In recent years, Siloam Springs has become a popular tourist destination thanks to its unique history, beautiful weather, and quirky characters. Siloam Springs is located in Pulaski County, just east of Little Rock. It is one of the most rural counties in Arkansas, and it has a population of just over 1,000 people. The town was named after the springs that dot the landscape around it - these are silty springs that provide drinking water for many nearby farms. The first settlers to Siloam Springs were five brothers - John Pugh (1860-1947), James Ritchie (1862-1937), David Gentry (1865-1932), Thomas Hargrave (1867-1951), and Solomon Townsend (1869-1945). They set up shop on what is now the corner of Main Street and Elm Street near the springs. Their farm became an early center for local trade and commerce. By 1880, there were six families living in Siloam Springs - four farmers, one school teacher, and one servant. In 1881, a group of businessmen from Little Rock bought land southeast of town and began developing it into a large resort town. They called their development "Siloam Springs." The resort attracted visitors from all over Arkansas and Missouri because it offered everything they could want: good food, reliable water supplies, clean air, etc. The town quickly grew into a major cultural center in western Arkansas during the 19th century - hosting concerts by famous singers like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Will Rogers., as well as theatrical productions such as Aida. During World War II, Siloam Springs played host to several important events including Victory Dance at Park Hall on July 30th 1942; Operation Overlord Stations on October 9th 1944; Japanese surrender ceremony at Yuma Proving Ground on December 8th 1945;and finally President Harry S Truman's address to Congress at Ford Auditorium on February 3rd 1946. In 1954 construction began on Interstate 40 which bypassed downtown Siloam Spring; however due to problems with subsidence caused by drainage works done nearby during that time period,[3]siloamspring lost most if not all its residents within 15 years[4]. In 1978 developer Don Armstrong purchased much of downtown business properties[5], restored some historic buildings,[6]and built new luxury hotels adjacent to Interstate 40 – making him one of only two developers everto have successfully created a downtown business district in central AR.[7] Today much importantly about Downtown Siloam Spring is its continuing reconstruction effort spearheaded by Mayor Rick Wright along with city staff
