The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Springdale, Arkansas in 1979. This service was started by Colonel William H. Caldwell and Major John W. Hogg to help support the base during war time. The gift history program has continued through the years and now includes more than 4,000 military personnel from all over the country who provide unique gifts for civilians and members of the military. Springdale, Arkansas is a small town located in the Ozarks region of northwest Arkansas. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springdale-Rogers County metropolitan area. The name "Springdale" comes from an early settler's name for what is now the town - "Springerville." The community was founded in 1881 by James Bledsoe and his wife Emma. At that time, it consisted of just a few hundred people. By 1910, however, Springdale had increased its population to 2,000 and had developed into a major commercial center in the Ozarks. In addition to its large hotel and other business buildings, Springdale also boasted several smaller villages which functioned as residential areas. One such village was Elmwood (now called Oak Grove) which began as a farmstead on the east side of town and grew into a sizable suburb over time. Another village, Indianola (now renamed Hinton), started out as about fifty homes on the south side of town and eventually became an upscale shopping center with several high-rise buildings. In recent years, Springdale has seen some impressive development changes: In 2007 it became one of only two towns in Arkansas to receive approval from the state government for full annexation into Platte County; moreover, this annexation has helped bring more jobs and businesses to the community while giving residents access to more public services than they would have otherwise been able to enjoy. Additionally, improvements have been made to infrastructure including new roads and water lines; these projects are intended not only to improve access but also create jobs within Springdale itself. Despite all these progressives efforts though - including recent annexations - many residents still maintain that they remain their hometowns despite experiencing rapid growth throughout much of their history
