Springdale is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Springdale is known for its annual Arkansas State Fair and its ArkWalk program which encourages tourism in the city by hosting events throughout the year to attract visitors. The first permanent settler in what would become Springdale was James Hargrave who arrived on July 4, 1826 while traveling west from Memphis with his family. In 1827 Hargrave founded what would become Springdale on land he had purchased from Major John Treadwell and others near present day Rogers Road and Highway #4 east ofRogers Lake. William Burt also settled in this area around this time; he built a cabin on land that now forms part of downtown Springdale. In 1830 Daniel Boone discovered oil fields near present day Rogers Road and Highway #4 and began exploration for oil companies; however, no production ensued until 1848 when Samuel McGee discovering oil near present day Green Valley Drive (now Wartime Drive) started production for the McGee Oil Company localizing it as springdale wells were drilled thereabouts. By 1860 much of Northwest Arkansas had been extensively explored by men looking for new sources of wealth as railroads were connecting cities all over America and petroleum became a valuable commodity; thus towns such as Springdale grew rapidly aroundoil rigs located offshore in Gulfport-Biloxi Refinery just south of Mobile Bayou providing transportation to Mobile Bayou where crude oil was shipped downriver to various markets worldwide including Europe and Japan where it fetched high prices on global markets The town site chosen for Springdale was originally called "Arkansas Post" due to concerns about possible Indian attacks on travelers passing through this region during the early 1800s but soon came to be known as "Springdale" after President James K. Polk's visit there in April 1865 when he announced plans for Reconstruction following the American Civil War During World War II many military bases were constructed in Arkansas including Fort Worth Army Air Field (now Arlington Army Base), Fort Smith Army Air Field (now Fort Smith AFB), Camp Robinson (later Camp Robinson HS) and Brownwood Army Airfield northeast of Little Rock A total of 15 military installations resulted from Project Alamo which led to an increase in industrial development across Northwest Arkansas with associated jobs throughout rural areas adjacent thereto resulting primarily from munitions manufacturing plants such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Raytheon Missile Systems Inc., electronic components manufacturer Western Electric Corp., textile manufacturers United Mining & Milling COs etc.; service industries included restaurants, small businesses, truck stop/motel operations etc.; although not all these establishments survived into the 21st century Some notable examples are: old Goodyear tire plant at Enterprise Rd./State Rte 214 still exists today; Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Plant Complex off US Hwy 57 between Camden Dr./US Hwy 70 & Ark Walk Blvd.; Raytheon Missile Systems Research Laboratory at Bagdad Rd./Hwy 359 north side of Little Rock Arsenal
