With this appointment came responsibility for organizing and arming the newAAF as well as providing air support for ground troops fighting against Nazi Germany and Italy throughout WWII – an important task given that aircraft only had limited use against infantry targets at best (See Figure 1). The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the world's premier air forces and has a rich history of giving gifts. Gifts have been a part of USAF culture for nearly sixty years, beginning with the founding of the USAF in 1947. The USAF Gift History website archives and preserves gift history from across the USAF through online donation platforms. The origins of the USAF gift-giving tradition can be traced back to World War II when pilots in RAF England helped send food items to their military allies in Japan. After the war, RAF personnel returned home with a love for aviation and began to give gifts as a way to show their appreciation. In 1948, then-Chief Master Sergeant Curtis LeMay organized an emergency Christmas party at Lackland AFB in Texas that was attended by many senior Air Force leaders including General George C Marshall. At this event, General Marshall presented Chief Master Sergeant LeMay with an engraved silver service cake server that symbolized his new role aschief organizer and promoter of USAAF gifting activity. In 1951, then-Airmen First Class Garland Hargrave donated four Spitfires worth $1,500 to use as instructional aircraft for cadets at Randolph AFB near Dallas. This was followed by another donation from Airmen First Class Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1952 when he gave two Beechcraft Bonanza helicopters valued at $2,000 each to use at Mather AFB near Sacramento, California; Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson; and Fairchild AFB near Spokane Washington. These donations were all made through Donor Bank which allowed servicemen and women who had contributed money or goods directly to members of the USAF (and other branches of government) to become donors within minutes! In 1969 - after over 50 years - Headquarters Squadron 5th Bomb Wing gifted three McDonnell Douglas VC-9s valued at $5 million each to be used as aircraft modification test beds during Operation Neptune's Spear which was conducted against North Vietnam). During this time period also some notable donations included: In 1974 - Headquarters Squadron 12th Bomb Wing gifted five Boeing 727 jetliners valued at $21 million each outright (to be used for aerial refueling operations); Tactical Air Command bestowed its first operational wingsman badge on retired Major General James Doolittle Jr who had given them four Boeing 747 jetliners valued at $206 million each; Headquarters Squadron 1st Bomb Wing bestowed its first operational insignia on Lieutenant Colonel Clifford E Jones who had donated ten Lockheed L-7E Commando trainers; In 1978 - Headquarters Squadron 3rd Bomb Wing bestowed two McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom III fighters known as "Wolverine" on Captain WG Boyd who had donate 36 Beechcraft Bonanza helicopters; On December 15th 1978 - Headquarters Squadron 9th Bomb Wing gifted one McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet fighter jets known as "Thunderbolt" on Brigadier General Tad Szulc who had donate 16 McDonnell Douglas MD-81H Stratotankers; And finally on December 17th 1978 - Headquarters Squadron 2nd Bomb Wing gifted six McDonnellDouglas DC-8 Skytrain Jetliners known as "Spirit" on Rear Admiral Michael Sarnoff who had donate 24 Convair AC/DC 880 flying boats). These are just a few examples among many that have been documented through Donor Bank throughout Commander Aircraft Storage Units stationed around the world! Derby, Connecticut is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 5,772 at the 2010 census. Derby is located on the southern edge of the town of Tolland and is bordered by the towns of East Hartford to the north and West Hartford to the east. The town was founded in 1789 and became part of Tolland County in 1836. It has a history that goes back to 1789 when Derby was founded as a small village under the name Heathfield by three men: John Derby, Ebenezer Darton, and Samuel Holden. In 1812 it became a town under the name of Derby after its founders approved an act creating it. On July 4th, 1838 Derby passed a vote to become an incorporated borough with voting rights for all residents over 21 years old. The first settler in what would become Derby was Ebenezer Darton who arrived IN 1789 during Bridgeport's early days as a settlement along what would become Main Street. He built his house on what would later be called Green Street near where modern-day State Road 9 intersects Route 12 south of downtown today Darton also developed land along present day Routes 10 and 112 which he donated to Tolland County for development into today's downtown area including what is now known as White Hall Square HVAC Park & Recreation Area Heathfield soon afterward became one of Bridgeport’s most important commercial areas with several large stores including Smith & Wetherbee ; Shoe Exchange; Bates Hardware store; Auld’s Meat Market; Asphalt Paving Company; Mr. Morse’s grocery store (now demolished) ; Drury’s barbershop (now demolished). By 1800 there were five churches in derby with two brick buildings : First Congregational Church (later replaced by Gothic Revival structure) on Broadway overlooking Water Street ; Second Congregational Church (later replaced by current building) on Union Avenue next door to Mrs Cramer's Arcade . There were also several dwellings including Mrs Deane's dwelling now used as offices for Stroudsburg Public Library . According to local legend some early settlers brought pigs home from England while others raised chickens or hogs In 1825 John Fenton bought 5 acres adjacent to present day White Hall Square from Ebenezer Darton for $100 Fenton named his property “The Paddock” because he thought it would provide good hunting ground for deer Another early settler who made an impact on derby was Elijah Sprague who owned 11 acres adjoining The Paddock which he donated specifically for township purposes between 1827 – 1830 . Sprague built himself a mill pond on his land which supplied water needed by both his mill & farmstead until around 1860 when additional water supplies came available via railroad connected to larger cities In those days watermarks could still be seen atop many buildings throughout derby due largely to surface water infiltration over time
