New London is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 30,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New England metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1664 by Puritans and became an incorporated village in 1784. New London's municipal charter was granted on November 15, 1814. The town was named for Nicholas-Jacques Conte, 1st Viscount Newtown (1647–1721), a French nobleman who had settled in the region in 1660 and helped develop what is now Hartford County. The first permanent English settler in New London was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, 1st Viscount Newtown (1647–1721). He arrived from France with his family around 1660 and began to farm land that he later donated to the new colony of Connecticut as part of a deal which allowed him to become one of the Province's first landowners. In 1701 Conte married Anne Blanchard (died 1711), daughter of Captain Nathaniel Blanchard of Mystic River Colony and sister-in-law to Lieutenant Colonel John Strachey who fought at Valley Forge during the American Revolution. In 1814 Nicholas-Jacques' son Jacques Conte sold his interest in New London Village to settlers George Higginson and Edward Noyes for $1,500 cash plus 20 acres (8 ha) of woodland near present day Central Park West. At this time much of what makes up today central park west including much of Greenwich Village were undeveloped forest owned by Nicholas-Jacques' descendants until after World War II when they clearancecut much or all of it offrlce for housing developments such as One Hundred Years Park located across from Central Park West today known as Upper Manhattan Community Hospital & Medical Center

New London, Connecticut is a town located in the state of Connecticut. The population was 43,601 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from an ancient Indian trading post called Newtown. New London began as a small farming community and grew rapidly during the late 1800s as a result of its location on the original trade route between Hartford and Boston. In 1907, New London became part of the United States and experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location on both coasts. By 2000, it had reached its current size and significance as an economic center in eastern Connecticut. The first settlers to live in what is now New London were Englishmen who founded Newtown in 1636. They named their settlement after their home town of Northampton in England, which they had left behind when they migrated to America. Over time, other groups arrived here including Germans, Irishmen, Italians, Poles and French Canadians. Most of these early settlers were farmers with some manufacturing capabilities; however, by 1838 there were 50 businesses in New London employing over 1,500 workers. During the 1800s new transportation methods made possible by railroadroads led to increased trade between Hartford and Boston; this also contributed to New London's rapidly growing economy over that period. Railroads brought about new industries such as textiles and shoe making which soon supplanted agriculture as the primarystay of local economies. In addition to its role as an economic powerhouse throughout much of eastern Connecticut during this time period, New London also became known for itsablished schools – including one that eventually became Yale University –its impressive architecture – notably Trinity Episcopal Church (now First Congregational) and numerous private residences (such as Thatchers Mansion). One significant event that took place within NewLondon during this time was when John Fenton bought land adjoining what is now State Street for $2 per acre in 1847; this provided fertile ground for development thanks to easy access to water supplies through nearby Putnam River reservoirs! Today many notable landmarks within city limits are associated with Fenton’s purchase such as Putnam Valley Parketteogue Elementary School (now Fairbanks Middle School), City Hall (now Frostburg Community College), Fenton Place Shopping Center (later Chatham Mall) along with several Federal buildings such as United States Post Office #1 & #2 along with many commercial buildings dating back to early 19th century like Putnam Valley Creamery No 2 & 3 east bound side streets fronting Market St., later moved downtown across from Federal Building (& home todayof Chatham Mall).
