Brewing coffee has been a part of New London, Connecticut for over two hundred years. The town was founded in 1664 by General John Winthrop and named after the tidal River New London. After becoming a part of the United States in 1776, coffee became an important commodity and trade item. In 1837, Captain David Dunlap started planting coffee trees on land that now includes much of downtown New London. Today,Dunlap’s Coffee is one of the most well-known local businesses in town. The first coffeehouses in New London were called “The Friends Meeting House” and operated from 1793 to 1800. These small places served as social hubs for locals and visitors alike. Coffee was often purchased fresh from the beans roasted by local farmers or bought in bulk from merchants outside of town. In 1818, Captain David Dunlap planted his first coffee tree on what is now Elm Street in downtown New London. This early effort set the stage for what would become Dunlap’s Coffee Company which has continuously grown throughout its history today! In 1838, Captian Charles Coffin built his own home on Elm Street adjacent to Dunlap’s Coffee shop. This building still stands today and houses many of the company’s current employees! During World War II, much of the production for munitions took place at Dunlap’s Coffee Company located on Market Street across from City Hall (now known as State &State). Many people who lived and worked near Dunlap’s are buried there including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her husband President Franklin D Roosevelt! During this time period,Captain David Dunlap also donated land to build State University which now occupies much of downtown New London! It is said that when FDR visited town during wartime he stopped at The Park Inn where he had breakfast with Captian Charles Coffin before going into battle! After World War II ended, commercial brewing resumed at Duncliffe's with some new additions such as an espresso machine in 1951. At this time it was decided that Dunkin' Donuts would be the primary sponsor/brand name for Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Roasters Ltd., Inc., later renamed Dunkin' Brands Group Incorporated (DBG). DBG continued operations under multiple names until 1984 when they were finally merged into Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) - one of SBUX's subsidiaries is Chiavari Enterprises Inc., which operates Chiavari Baking LLC., a baking business within SBUX itself

During World War II (1939-1945), coffee became an important commodity due to its strategic importance as a fuel source for military vehicles and troops throughout Europe. After America's entry into World War II (1941), demand increased for coffeespeeds within the United States because so many people were going through rationing policies at that time.
