Torrington, Connecticut is a town in New England and the seat of Torrington Township. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worcester–New Haven, CT metropolitan area. The first permanent white settler in what is now Torrington was Dr. John Greenough who landed on the eastern shore of Long Island in 1664. Greenough's farmstead still stands on Islip Road in town. In 1795, General James Clinton founded West Point Academy which later became Yale University. During World War I, Torrington served as a garrison town for New Britain County and was one of only two towns in Connecticut to be Communist-founded (the other being Bridgeport). After the war, Torrington resumed its role as an agricultural center with fertile land surrounding it for growing crops such as corn, beans, milk products and hay. A major industry during this time was aluminum production which began arriving from Canada in the early 1950s and continues to this day. In recent years there has been a renaissance of arts and culture here with several successful festivals including Riverfestivals each summer that draws thousands of people to downtown Torrington; local art galleries; Asbury Park Brewery; and more than 20 small businesses that have sprung up around Downtown since 2006.

When General George Washington was marching his troops through Connecticut on their way to Boston, he stopped at Torrington for the night. The town had been spared during the Revolutionary War and became a haven for farmers and traders. In the 1800s, it continued to grow as a shipping center due to its position on the Great Lakes. The canal was built through Torrington in 1825 and made it an important transportation link between Chicago and Detroit. It also allowed goods from Canada to reach America's largest city. Today, Torrington is a small town with a population of around 900 people who live in several villages surrounding it. Its history is filled with tales of hardship and resilience, including one that stands out: The town was almost destroyed by fire in 1922 but refused to be evacuated despite the danger. The first mention of Torrington comes from c 1507 when William D'Avenant mentioned "Tornton" in his journal while traveling down the Danube River. This may be because King Henry II of England granted land along the river to John de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk in exchange for helping him against French invaders in 1096. Over time, other local residents picked up where they left off: building trading post, founding schools, and starting businesses. By 1793, there were over 100 residents living in Torrington proper; however, only about 30 remained after a devastating fire burned throughout much of that year which destroyed most of what little business had survived before then! In 1925-1926 two new canals were opened called the New Haven Canal and Hartford & Western Railroad Canals respectively- these brought misery and destruction directly into our village due to all their noise and traffic!!!!!! But without them we would still be living today within minutes or seconds of all those bad things going on outside!!!!!!!!!!!!! And if you ask us….. why didn't anyone evacuate????? The town of Torrington, Connecticut was founded in 1795 by a group of settlers led by Colonel John Winthrop. The town developed along the then-new Hartford River trade route and became an important center for education and commerce. In 1812, Torrington was the site of a skirmish between American and British forces that resulted in the death of one American soldier and the capture of three British soldiers. The town continued to grow during its early years, with many new buildings being erected in what is now downtown Torrington. By 1830, Torrington had become an sizable city with a population of over 2,000 people. Over time, however, as Hartford grew larger and more prosperous, Torrington's importance decreased and it slowly lost its status as a commercial center. In the 1920s, torrring began to experience rapid growth again due to new development in the area including factories and homes for wealthy citizens. However, during World War IITorrington experienced significant damage from bombings which left much of its architecture largely destroyed. Despite this setback, later eras have seen substantial growth in Torrington thanks to both new development as well as increasing tourism activity throughout the community.
