Torrington, Connecticut is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,837 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hartford–West Hartford–East Hartford Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter what is now Torrington were farmers who came from England in 1624. They named their town after themselves, Torrington-on-the-Hudson River (now New London). In 1768, the General Court awarded a grant of land to John Trumbull for his new college and library in what is now Yale University. In 1818, the town burned down due to an accidental fire that started in a barn. In 1822, the town built its own courthouse and jail which still stand today on Main Street. The first post office was established in 1830. By 1840, there were over 50 stores and businesses in Torrington with a population of 2,000 people. In 1854 and 1861 respectively, Torrington voted to secede from Connecticut and become an independent state called Rhode Island; however this referendum failed both times because no one wanted to leave their homes or community behind. In 1916 Congregationalist ministers founded Christ Church which still operates as a large congregation today (estimated membership around 4500). In 1924 the former sheet metal works buildings on Main Street were donated by Local Manufacturing Company president Harry Sizer to be used as Head Start care facilities for local children until they could be sent away for daycare or school when they reached age five years old; this building still stands today as part of Head Start's campus located adjacent to Waterbury Municipal Airport). The town of Torrington, Connecticut was settled in the early 1600s by Englishmen who were looking for a place to winter. The first permanent settler in Torrington was John Stevens, who arrived in 1665. The townspeople soon began to grow rich from the fur trade and agriculture that took off during the late 1700s and early 1800s. By 1814, Torrington had a population of over 2,000 people. It grew rapidly due to its location on the Connecticut River between Hartford and New Haven. In 1831, the town was renamed after General James K. Polk because he helped make it a part of the United States as a result of his role in the Mexican-American War. Torrington experienced some tough times during World War II, but has since recovered and is an important cultural center in the area. In recent years, Torrington has become known for its annual pumpkin festival which is one of the most popular events in town.
On October 17, 1664, the town of Torrington was chartered by King Philip II of Spain. The town was named for the family of Sir John Torrington who had originated from England. The first settler in Torrington was Nicholas French, who arrived in 1665. The first store in Torrington opened on May 1, 1714. In 1812, a school was built and the first post office opened on November 3, 1812. On February 6, 1824, a canal linking the Merrimack River to Connecticut opened and soon many businesses and residents moved into the new community. On January 25, 1860, a fire destroyed most of OldtownTorrington and killed two people; this event is generally considered to be the start oftorrington's rapid growth as a commercial center. New Town began to grow around it and by 1870 most of what is now downtown had been established. A Gothic Revival style church was built in 1870 across from what is now First Baptist Church (now Chippenham United Methodist Church). It became known as "The Dutch Reformed Church" because that is how it was originally designated on maps until 1873 when it changed its name to "First Presbyterian Church". A new synagogue also began operating in 1865 which later became Reform Judaism Center before being purchased by Congregation B’nai Israel in 1990 and becoming their main facility south of Hartford Avenue. Head Start children were started here as early as 1938 before moving into present-day Beecher Hills Elementary School across from Park Middle School beginning with grades K-8
