In 1916, J.P.'s son-in-law, Harry Peake became president of Torrington Coffee Company Limited. Harry Peake was an important figure in helpingto expand the coffee industry throughout Connecticut. After Harry's death in 1951, his widow Mrs. Cope succeeded him as President of Torrington Coffee Company Ltd., which continued to operate until it merged with Rheinwald Coffee Corporation in 1985.

The town of Torrington, Connecticut was settled in 1638 by the Pequot people. The first settler was John Tuttle. The town became a part of Hartford, Connecticut in 1868. In 1907, Torrington became the capital of Connecticut.
