The settlement that would become West Haven was first organized as a small village in 1692 by Capt. John Winthrop and Lt. Thomas Danforth on the east side of what is now Hadley Road. In 1814, it became part of Fairfield County when it was split off from Hartford County. It has since grown significantly due to its location close to state capital Hartford and its easy access to Interstate 95 and other major highways. One of the earliest settlers in West Haven was Captain John Winthrop who arrived in 1692 with his crew on horseback from Plymouth Colony for what would be his last expedition into New England waters before he founded this new colony on May 30th., 1693 known as select company 2 (now called Winslow). He named his new land "West Haven". The town's first settler was Daniel Fenton who arrived in 1701 and built a cabin on what is today Park Street; still standing today!
