Middletown, Delaware is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 3,041 at the 2010 census. Middletown is the largest town in Sussex County and home to the Dover Naval Air Station. The first Europeans to visit present-day Delaware were French traders from New France in 1609. They named the area "Midi-Tunc" (midtown) after their village of Tinchebucto on the lower Severn River. In 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, British troops burned down part of Middletown while retreating from Battle of Brandywine near Philadelphia. In 1802, Joseph Nicholson founded Newark Academy as one of three academies that would become University of Delaware (UD). Nicholson was a Quaker and had been expelled from Penn's College at West Chester for speaking out against religious discrimination. He became UD's first president and served until his death in 1828. In 1804–5 Nicholas erected a log cabin on what is now North High Street in Middletown for his wife and two young daughters; it remains standing today as an example of early architecture in this community. In 1807 he organized early Middletown Baptist Church with seven members but did not start living there himself until about 1830 because he felt too busy with UD work to live closer to campus full time. Dutch settlers arrived soon afterwards and builtLog Cabin #2 shortly before 1700 which still stands downtown today as part of Victory Park Historic Site - one of only a few remaining colonial buildings left in Delaware! European settlement continued through Indian Wars (1776-84), English Civil War (1803-1814), post-Revolutionary Period until 1865 when all vestiges were finally destroyed by developers who replaced them with modern housing developments! The Community Watch Committee website reports that “As late as 1911” there remained over 85% Dutch heritage remaining among residents – making it one of America’s oldest continuously inhabited Dutch communities! On July 10th 1915 Commodore John RodgersDDG USN died suddenly at sea while flying USS Constitution SSBN under Navy command off Wilmington NC when his airplane crashed into Devils Point Light near Dover Newsome Atoll during World War I Washington D CAmerican ExpeditionARY forces attacked Japanese forces ashore on Guam during Open season day without warning or authorisation resulting in many fatalities including Commodore Rodgers himself leading US naval forces providing deterrence against Japanese aggression

Middletown was founded in 1785 by Captain John Smith and his family. The town was named for the Middletown River, which flows through the town. The first settler in Middletown was John Gillett. In 1824, Captain James Purdy established a small trading post in Middletown. By 1830, there were about seventy-five people living in Middletown. In 1832, the U.S. Post Office moved from Newark to Middletown and remained there until it was discontinued in 1865. The last letter mailed from Newark to Middletown was on December 14, 1865. The first school in MiddletOWNwas built by Captains Smith and Purdy in 1834-35 with twelve students attending each day of instruction two hours long at Preble's Ferry on the Delaware River opposite the present site of Wilmington High School). It is interesting to note that this early school did not have any classrooms or desks; all students sat on benches outdoors while they learned their academic subject(s). In 1836, Colfax bought land adjoining what is now Fourth Street between Market and State streets for $100 per acre (about $4,000 today). This land had been donated by General Samuel Troup who had served as President of Delaware during the late period of American Independence when British rule ended abruptly upon independence proclamation September 14th, 1776.). Colonel Anthony Wayne then donated an additional 640 acres comprising much of what is now east side of 4th street between Market and Center Streets (north side since taken over by I-95) – thus giving rise to our current name “Middlesex County” although many counties within Maryland still bear that name because part of those counties borders Delaware! Captain John Smith's grandson Captain George Washington Smith saw fit to establish a Congregational church here also called First Presbyterian Church (now Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church), dedicated May 7th 1840 having come across it while exploring lands northwest of Philadelphia near where Delaware line meets Pennsylvania line! Reverend Driggs preached at this church from its beginning services until 1861 when he left for good due to secession issues ensuing from War Between States – but some Lefty type Methodist preachers continued weekly services until after America’s admission into Union January 12th 1861 thru several Episcopal Dioceses Intervened!! A large building program commenced resulting finally in incorporation as a municipality on March 25th 1861 under the name “Middlesex County” incorporating all deeds & property titles thereof!!! However most residents still continued using their individual surnames especially among men who enjoyed distinction & privilege within society like professionals like Doctors Clark (& others) Lawyers Daynor (& others) etc….. prior thereto government records list only Mr./Mrs./First Name/Last Name rather than socially identified surnames 🙂 On October 20th 1896 two trains collided just north of town killing both passengers instantly !! After monthslong investigation one conclusion drawn by local officials was that both train crews were drunk & high on opium!!! Race riots started immediately afterward with violence erupting throughout entire city causing great destruction including desecration & destructionof churches ++459 people dead with more than 1 million dollars worthin damage caused +++ following trial this led ultimately to impeachment proceedings against then Governor William McKinley ++ event eventually leading ultimately to his termination
Middletown was founded in 1638 by Sir George Monmouth as a trading post on the Delaware River. The town grew rapidly and by 1692, it had a population of over two thousand people. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Middletown became an important base of operations for the Patriot forces. During the Revolutionary War, Middletown was unsuccessfully siege by British forces in 1779 and 1780. After the war, the town declined and passed into obscurity. However, in 1814, Middletown was granted incorporation as a borough within the city of Philadelphia. In 1896, Middletown became part of the new state of Delaware and has been its sole municipality ever since. In 2006, Middletown annexed portions of Gwynedd Township from Wilmington to form a new borough called Newtownsquare-Gwynedd which had a population of over four hundred people at that time.
