The Newark, Delaware Army National Guard was originally organized on December 6, 1775 in response to the outbreak of the American Revolution. The first officers of the Newark Guard were commissioned on February 16, 1776. The unit was disbanded on July 1, 1800 due to budgetary cuts. On October 15, 1862, a new Newark Guard regiment was organized and placed under command of Colonel George W. Smith within the 2nd United States Infantry Brigade commanded by Major General John C. Fremont. On November 12th, 1864 at Battle of Monmouth this regiment fought in what is considered one of the most decisive engagements during the Civil War. In 1865 this brigade also fought at Battle of Appomattox Court House where it successfully destroyed Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee despite heavy losses In 1934 a new military district headquartered in Newark was established and with it an army battalion which became known as Company A (Newark) 330th Infantry Regiment later renamed as 350th Infantry Battalion after World War II ended and company redesignated as 3rd Battalion (Majors). Company A (Newark) remained active until its disbandment in 1969 when it merged with another battalion from District Headquarters New Castle County to become Stationed Readiness Force - Delaware Army National Guard which still remains active today
