Newark is a city in Delaware, United States. The population was 33,651 at the 2010 census. Newark began as part of Kent County on the banks of the Susquehanna River and became an incorporated municipality in 1846. It had a population of 38,716 when it joined the United States as a result of the 1964 New Jersey statehood referendum. Newark's economic development has been based on its location as a crossroads for carriers and manufacturers traveling betweenPhiladelphia and Atlantic City; its status as a center for education and health care; and its role in suburban America. In 2007, Newark was chosen by Forbes magazine as one of America's "10 Best Places to Live." The early history of Newark is unknown but it may have been founded by Native Americans or by migrants from northern India who came through what is now Philadelphia during the seventeenth century. By 1795, two British military officers – Lieutenant Colonel John Pitcairn and Major General David Caldwell – were living in Newark with their families. They decided to make it their new home because they could not find any other place to live in Delaware that would allow them to practice their religion freely without fear of being discriminated against. The first European settlers included Captain John Smith (a native of Virginia) who arrived on July 12, 1795, with his family and three friends: his brother-in-law Arthur Stroud (of Portsmouth, Hampshire), James Cook (from London) and Gilbert Stuart (the son of Sir George Stuart). On July 10th next year all 5 men set out from Perth Amboy on horseback for Delaware but they only made it about 10 miles before they were stopped by local Indians who accused them of being spies for Great Britain! Their horses were taken away so they had no choice but to continue walking until they reached Fort Christina where they lodged with some friendly Indian traders until August 3rd when they finally arrived at Dover Harbour! After landing he saw that there was already an established town there called Wilmington! He named this new place after himself which we now know as Delaware’s capital city - Wilmington! In 1798 William Thornton built a small fort at what is now known as Bridgeport which served as a trading post along theSusquehanna River between Philadelphia and Camden . Thornton also employed some old Englishmen from Gloucester County who lived near him including Lt Col John Moore “Napper” Perry who became famous for shooting an animal known locally as “The Gizzard” which he killed with his bare hands - something that still makes headlines today! When Williamsons store failed to become successful he sold his interest in Bridgeport back to Thornton giving him exclusive rights to build another store there! This second store was eventually destroyed by fire however Napper Perry managed to save both buildings!! Finally after years Of hard work William Thornton was able to open his third store located at 209 High Street later renamed Monument Square !! This milestone happened just 1 week after Pennsylvania acquired control over Delaware from Great Britain!! Although there are several theories about how Vice Admiral Richard Stockton founded what is now Newark we can be pretty sure because he left descriptions about it throughout his lifetime including one where he refers To Itself As A Small Village On The Susquehanna River But Now Called Easton Which Is So Near Philadelphia That I Shall Not Mention It Here Again !! Although our knowledge about Richard Stockton comes mainly from oral histories compiled by people such as Samuel Morison or Joseph Pulitzer we do know that he did actually establish a small village near present day Easton called Newark!!!!! We also know that this village eventually became part of Kent County adding insultingly enough that even though we got our name form him NJ still calls us Essex county!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* *Some people argue whether or not thisVillage actually got its name form Commodore Richard Stockton himself instead like many others believe however I'm stickingwith my gut feeling so here goes nothing!) Early American records show evidence indicating that Europeans had been living in present day easton Township since around 1700 although little is known about their activities hereuntil relatively recently.* *It should be noted howeverthat according to some research done recently northeast easton township might actually have been established much earlier than this due primarilyto excavations taking place within current boundaries ownedby Pascack Hills Regional Park*) In 1782 Robert Morris started building roads between Philly & Camden(* these roads would eventually become modern interstate highways*) And soon afterwards other farmers too followed suit starting up tiny villages dottingthe rural area around us(*these villages grew rapidly thanks largelyto transportation advances suchorchestrated by ferries crossing the river*). Livingston Parish took over responsibilityfor governing these villages resultingin somewhat more centralized government although each village continuedto operate autonomously under its own rules until 1840 when all villages were amalgamated into one entity underpioneering sheriff Edward Byrne(*briefly mentioned above)).
