Air Force gift history in Newnan, Georgia begins with the establishment of the military airfield at Rickenbacker Field in 1943. The field was named for General James H. "Jimmy" Byrnes, who had been instrumental in establishing theAAF in 1942. After World War II ended, Rickenbacker Field became an important training ground for pilots and aircraft manufacturers. It also became a popular tourist destination for residents of the city of Newnan. In 1957, Air National Guard Base McConnell was established on land donated by Judge John J. McConnell Jr.. The base served as a regional air traffic control center until it was closed in 1996. In 1969, First Lieutenant Colonel Donald Lisman assumed command of Air National Guard Unit 422 Commander Squadron 1 at McConnell AFB after its activation as a provisional squadron during Operation Desert Storm. The airport opened to general aviation in 1978 when South Georgia Municipal Airport was transferred from the FAA to the Department of Defense under Title 10 United States Code section 121(a). In 1984, McConnell AFB became operational as Joint Forces Command's (JFC) Twelfth Air Force Headquarters and it is still used today by that organization as well as other USAF commands and subordinate units within Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Forces Africa (AFRICA). In 1992-1994 Commander Squadron 2 made an emergency landing on Iwo Jima during Operation Desert Storm; this event helped increase awareness about jet travel through Republic Airlines flights from Atlanta to Miyazaki Japan which then took passengers back to Atlanta over Iwo Jima AFB parking areas late into night without any connection to hotel rooms or airports across America

Newnan is an incorporated town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Atlanta. Newnan was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1853 as a small community near present-day Roswell and became a manufacturing center for cotton goods. The area around present-day Newnan was once home to several thousand slaves who worked in local plantations. The early settlers of what would become Newnan were farmers and their families. By 1860, most of the town had been built and many businesses had opened up: a post office, grocery store, blacksmith shop, tailor shop, printshop/photography studio etc. Cotton production became more important in the late 19th century as it allowed for large scale transportation and marketing which helped bring jobs to Newnan economy. By 1900 there were over 100 businesses in the town including but not limited to breweries (Blankenbarger & Company), banks (Atlanta National Bank), department stores ( Macy’s and JCPenney) as well as mills (Fulton Manufacturing Co.) In addition to its main economic base of cotton production; during this time period Newnan also experienced some growth due to its location within walking distance of both Atlantica Parkway—the main connector between Atlanta and Jacksonville—and other national highways that made it easy for people to get around town. In the 1940s most industry stopped or moved away from Georgia because of WWII; however new industries such as plastics processing soon emerged thanks largely to Army Generals Hodges and Stilwell's mandating that American manufacturers produce goods for Japanese forces during World War II.
