The base's first aircraft was a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter. On July 11th, 1949, the base bought its first jet aircraft when it was purchased by the USAAF from Republic Aviation Corporation. The last cadet to receive an air force gift was Johnnie Owens on November 6th, 1959.
St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in Clarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name "St. Marys" comes from the Catholic Church's patron saint, Mary. The small town was founded in 1847 and became a community of Catholics when Father John Peters donated his land to organized religious activity there. The parish has had its share of controversies over issues such as abortion and contraception since its inception; however, it remains an active faith community with many priests and nuns living and working in the town. In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded St. Marys, Georgia on the Appalachian Mountains. The town was named in honor of Saint Mary, the patron saint of Georgia. In 1824, the Town of Gwinnett was established adjacent to St. Marys and it became an independent city in 1903. The population of Gwinnett peaked at over 100,000 in 1920 but declined over the next three decades due to various factors including a decrease in industrial production and a rise in white flight from the area. By 1990, however, Gwinnett had recovered somewhat and was home to about 25,000 residents. Today, St.Marys is a small community located just outside of Atlanta with a population of around 10-15 thousand people ( concentrated within ZIP code 30004). It is one of several small rural communities located along Interstate 85which make up the Central Savannah Metropolitan Area – an entity made up of 11 municipalities including Athens-Clarke County; Dawson City; Gainesville; Macon County; Roswell Park; Suwannee Valley Authority; Waycross Heights; and Wilcox County which Together form the largest continuous rural area east of the Mississippi River between Savannah and Montgomery County PA
On February 28, 1847, the first Baptist church in St. Marys was established. The first pastor of this church was Rev. John Fenton. Reverend Fenton served for one year and then resigned to become a Methodist minister in nearby Milledgeville. After three years as a Methodist minister, Reverend Fenton returned to the Baptist faith and organized his church on May 1, 1849. The original building that housed the Baptist church at this location is still in use today as the parish hall.
