The St. Marys, Georgia Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1853. The unit was organized as the 2nd Regiment of Infantry in that year and served in various capacities until it was mobilized for World War I in 1917. After the war the regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment and served in World War II as part of Army Ground Forces units. During World War I, the St. Marys, Georgia Army National Guard is credited with liberating Savannah from Confederate control and playing a significant role in Operation Crossroads which led to Atlanta's Liberation. In 1945, the regiment was again redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment and served in troops stationed at Fort Stewart until its activation for duty during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Sinceactivation, the 3rd Infantry Regiment has played a vital role throughout several wars including Iraq and Afghanistan where it has earned multiple awards including three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. The unit is also well-known for its annual Christmas parade which is one of few events held outside of town on Christmas Day.

The St. Marys, Georgia Army Garrison was established in February 1794 as a result of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution. The Garrison was originally staffed by soldiers from North Carolina and Georgia. In 1802, a new armory was built on the site of what is now the St. Marys County Courthouse. The Garrison also acquired land for a military cemetery in 1832.
In 1785, a group of Georgians from St. Marys decided to move to Georgia in order to found a new town. They named their new town after the mother of Jesus, SaintMarys. The community flourished and soon became known for its educational opportunities as well as its piety and charity. Today, St. Marys remains an active religious community with over 350 members who come from all walks of life. The history of St. Marys is intertwined with that of Georgia herself. For centuries, Georgian culture was based on Christianity and the faith played an important role in Georgian society both before and after independence from Great Britain in 1947. One of the most significant events in this history is the martyrdom of Bartholomew Ives, which took place in 1834 at the hands of Russian officers under General Pyotr Korsakov during the Russo-Georgian War (1812-1813). This event helped lead to Georgian national consciousness and drove Georgians to adopt Christianity as their state religion (see also: Religion in Georgia). Today, St. Marys continues to play an important role in Georgian culture as a religious community with close ties toGeorgia's republican government and people. In addition, it has developed into one of the most successful Christian schools in Georgia - providing education for children from pre-primary through high school levels (ages 8-21 years old). Today, St. Marys is a thriving community with over 100 sisters living on three campuses: one in Rome, one in Athens-Clarke County, and one in Savannah-Chatham County. Saint Marys enjoys a rich history that has helped it become one of America's most venerable religious communities.
In 1821, a group of Methodist ministers from St. Marys, Georgia organized the first Baptist church in that state. The Methodists soon followed suit and the two denominations merged in 1828.
