The St. Marys Army Depot was founded on July 9, 1918 in the town of St. Marys, Georgia by Colonel Augustus H. Holmes as a military armaments depot to produce munitions for the United States Army. The first store opened at 12120 US Highway 16 in December 1918 and produced supplies for the U.S. Military forces stationed in World War I and World War II; later it became an ammunition plant producing shells, rockets, grenades and rounds for artillery and machine guns. In 1951, when the Army closed the depot, it sold its assets to Bethlehem Steel Corporation which then used the building as a steel production plant until 1984 when it closed down due to financial problems. The St. Marys, Georgia Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The unit was first organized in 1818 as the 1st Regiment of militia of Georgia under the command of General James Wilkinson. Over time, the regiment grew and changed its name to the 2nd Regiment of Militia in 1827, 3rd Regiment in 1830, 4th Regiment in 1834, 5th Regiment in 1838, 6th Regiment in 1840 and 7th Regiment in 1846. In 1861, Confederate forces besieged Fort Sumter and on April 14th that year the 2nd Georgia Infantry was mustered into service as part of Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. The regiment served with distinction during the Civil War and even participated in some battles including Gettysburg which led to its nickname “The Lost Battalionâ€. After the war ended, many members of this regiment transitioned into civilian life and were discharged or died from wounds received during the conflict. In 1921, following a reorganization within the Georgia National Guard system, these units were reorganized again as separate brigades under Commander Atherton Youngblood who served until his retirement in 1945. Finally after years of maneuvering within various brigade headquarters throughout South Carolina and Florida before being consolidated with another brigade at Savannah area for operations against Japanese forces during World War II (1941-1945), this brigade became known as Brigade Airmen from 1946-1948 when it was reactivated at home station here at St Marys AFB (now Global Force One) following America's entry into World War II Since then Brigade Airmen have played an important role both domestically and abroad deployments such as Operation Desert Storm (1991-1992), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2006) Afghanistan NATO Mission Phoenix 2004 & 2007 Gulf Coast 2006 & 2008 Hurricane Katrina relief efforts; Special Operations missions; military funeral services
The Parish of St. Marys, Georgia, is one of the largest in the Diocese of Atlanta. Established in 1855, it has a population of around 5,000 people and covers an area of over 1 square mile. The parish has five churches and several thousand members who attend services each week. St. Mary's was founded by Father John Walsh in 1855 as an agricultural parish covering 1 square mile on the eastern edge of the city of Atlanta. The first church was built on what is now Goodfellow Avenue in 1880 and soon after other chapels were added to serve the growing community: All Saints (1885), Immaculate Conception (1901), Our Lady & Child (1907), Holy Rosary (1911), and Saint Patrick's (1920). In 1949, Pope Pius XII designated St.Marys as a titular see for two new districts within his United States Ecclesiastical Province: Fall River District including Springfield and Westwood Village in Massachusetts and Wilkesboro-Barre District including Smyrna and Warrenton in Virginia. Today, St.Marys continues to grow with numerous affiliated parishes across North America that are all dedicated to following the same faith tradition at home or abroad through religious education programs, Marian prayer groups, pilgrimage events, major pilgrimages/expositions/festivals, children’s ministries…the list goes on! One such program that takes place each year at St.Mary’s is Our Lady’s Parish Feast Day House Tour which provides children from various areas within our diocese with an opportunity to come into contact with Our Lady during her feast day procession from their homes back to our church where they receive instruction from Sister Barbara about how to pray for us during this special time!
