The coffee industry in St. Marys, Georgia began in the early 1800s when a group of farmers in the area started to grow coffee beans. The first commercially roasted coffee was made in 1824 by John A. Browning and it was called "St.Marys Coffee." The name "St.Marys" is derived from the community of that name located on the banks of the Stoney River in central Georgia. The first commercial roasting plant was built in 1875 by Jancis Robinson and it continued to be used until 1927. During this time, many of the world's most famous brands such as Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Peet's Coffee and Dutch Bros., were roasted here. Today, Sperry & Hutchinson operates one of the largest roasting plants in southern Georgia with over 300 employees responsible for roastmaster workforces that produce more than 12 million pounds of coffee each month. One of the earliest coffee roasters in St. Marys, Georgia was The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf which opened its doors in 1907. In 1928, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf merged with Peet's Coffee to become Peet's Coffee & Tea. In 1961, Peet's Coffee & Tea moved from its original location on Court Street in downtown St. Marys to a new location on Western Avenue. In 1984, Peet's merged with Dutch Bros., becoming Dutch Bros. & Co. At this point, the company had over 100 locations across the United States including locations in Georgia and Florida. In 1992, Dutch Bros.' parent company Maxwell House pulled out of the coffee industry and all company assets were sold to De Beers Group for $2 billion making it one of the largest coffee companies in the world at that time.
Pope Francis called St. Marys, Georgia "a place of pilgrimage" in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (2013). The city was founded by the apostle Peter and named after him in honor of the mother of God. In 1865, African Americans established a Methodist church there, which soon became one of the most influential black denominations in America. Today, St. Marys is an ethnically diverse and religiously plural city with a population of over 150,000 people. The history of St. Marys began with the arrival of SaintMarys Baptist Church in 1837 from Savannah, Georgia. The Reverend Druellen led this congregation for many years until his death in 1893. At that time Revcillen's son-in-law Dillard succeeded him as pastor and served for forty years before retiring in 1944. From then until 1963 Pastor Sewell led the church through several difficult times including two African American mayors who were ousted due to race riots that followed civil rights protests across America during that period known as "the Great Black Awakening." In 1963 Pastor Sewell moved the church to its present location on Telegraph Road near Cobb Parkway because he felt it would be more accessible to Southern white residents who had fled voting precinct violence erupting throughout Atlanta during that decade following passage of laws allowing black Atlantans to vote without fear of discrimination or violence within their own neighborhoods. Thereafter Steeplechase Boulevard became known as "Church Street" where congregants walked hand-in-hand alongside pastors leading Sunday services down this long block flanked by well-topped Victorian homes while children ran around outside playing catch on swings attached to large trees set back from State Road 22nd Avenue just east of downtown St Marys Plaza shopping mall located adjacent Interstate 85 southbound traffic stoplight at North Druid Hills Drive exit off I-85 on north side street adjoining Cobb Parkway Turnpike Exit #2

As one of only two major U.S. cities that remains completelyCatholic after centuries of Protestantism, St. Marys has become an important cultural and religious center for many Georgians. The first Catholics arrived in what is now St. Marys in 1784 as part of a group of Spanish missionary priests who were sent to evangelize the Native American population around these areas. By 1800, there were over 250 people living in what is now St. Marys County as Catholics made their way to this new land to settle among native people who had long been hostile towards them because they were members of another religion: Judaism! Many local farmers became Christians while others joined forces with English settlers to resist waves of European arrivals who were seeking land grants and resources that would have allowed them to build castles or take over villages! In 1802, when Georgia became a United States territory, St. Marys was designated as its capital city! During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many German-American men from Atlanta moved into south Georgia looking for opportunities denied them by white society at large! These men constituted so much of what later called “the Gullah culture” which refers to African Americans who migrated down South during this time period (Moses Hammons). One such man was Rudolph Kappeler whose family arrived in 1875 from Germany via New York City! Kappeler owned several businesses including a grocery store and coal mine before he eventually became mayor of Savannah from 1909-1913! When World War I began on April 6th 1915, Kappeler enlisted in the military as soon as he learned his service could be done without giving up his civil rights! He served honorably until his death on December 15th 1918 at age 67 years old! After his death, his son took over running the business which continued under his name until it closed around 2000! Although not well known today outside ofGA due largely to changes within Christianity throughout most parts of America (such as increased numbers unaffiliated with any religion), Rudolph Kappeler remains an important figure in Georgian Catholicism through his legacy both at home country level and nationally!!
