The Coast Guard has been in operation in St. Marys, Georgia since 1879. The Coast Guard was created to help protect the coastline and maritime interests of the State of Georgia and its people. In 1951, the Coast Guard acquired its present name, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Today, the Coast Guard provides coastal defense, fisheries management, environmental protection, public safety, education and outreach. The Coast Guard also provides a vital service to our Nation by providing critical resources for homeland security and emergency response. St. Marys, Georgia is a town located inClarke County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke metropolitan area and is the only incorporated community in Clarke County. The first permanent European settlers in St. Marys were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1816 as part of the First Great Awakening movement. The town was platted in 1821 and named after Saint Mary of Nazareth, who had died two years earlier. In 1825, a post office was established at St. Marys with the name "Pine Bluff." In 1829, a sawmill opened and began producing lumber for local homes and businesses. The Panic of 1837 caused a decline in business activity but saw millowners continued to operate their mills until 1840 when they closed down permanently due to lack of demand from consumers. A measure to incorporate the town was proposed by Jno.--Jasper Green on November 3, 1850; it passed by an overwhelming margin (81-2). On July 12, 1861, following Confederate military movements through Clarke County during the American Civil War (the war having begun two weeks earlier), incorporation became effective under state law as an unincorporated community within Clarke County without its own governing body or elected officials; this change did not apply to Pine Bluff which remained an incorporated village until 1978 when it became an unincorporated community again within Clarke County In 1896–97 PGA Tour golfer Ben Hogan played his final round at Pine Bluff Golf Club before moving permanently to Augusta National Golf Club where he would remain one of golf's most successful players up until his death there on January 14th 2009 aged 89 years old
The town of St. Marys was founded in 1807 by a group of settlers from Georgia. It became an important center for the cotton industry, and its economy helped support the growth of nearby Savannah.
