Saint Marys, Georgia is a small town located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Saint Marys was founded by saints John and Catherine of Alexandria in 1786 as a religious community for women in the Georgian spirit that included a conventicle, school, and library. The first bishop of Atlanta met with representatives from Saint Mary's on December 4th 1793 to discuss plans for the new Diocese of Atlanta. The original church building was built on what is now the corner of Ponce de Leon and Monroe Streets. The cornerstone for this structure was laid on February 15th, 1794 by Bishop James Wareham with assistance from King George II of Great Britain who gave land for the establishment of St. Mary's School which opened on October 6th 1802. In 1907-1908 an addition were added to house another conventicle (the present day athletic field). In 1915 Pope Benedict XV designated Saint Marys as one of six parishes within Rome that would form the new diocese under his papacy's New Apostolic Constitution "Ecclesia Dei". Bishop William Halsey consecrated Saints John and Catherine into parish status on October 19th 1916 with dedication services taking place at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Cathedral in Atlanta. Unfortunately due to World War I many families left saintMarys because they could not support war efforts or find work outside their homes so much as because they were considered Unbelievers or Infidels by Catholic standards so during peacetime many people returned although growth slowed considerably until African Americans regained control over much southern white Protestant Christianity through programs such asOperation Crossroads starting in 1957 followed by black Catholics coming to saintMarys when integration became possible beginning in 1963 Pope John Paul II recognized saintMarys Parishhood status once again effective January 1st 1984 giving it back its pre-1984 borders complete with all its privileges including exemption from property taxes (this change took effect retroactively for properties already taxed prior to that date) . Although growth has resumed somewhat since then (most notably with construction projects being conducted throughout downtown saintmarys) income levels remain low given poverty rates throughout most Georgia . Despite these challenges some families have decided continue living there even though economic opportunities have improved elsewhere In 2007-2008 renovations were completed focusing specifically upon increasing lighting efficiency including investments in LED lights along with overall modernization including installation of air conditioning and updated plumbing systems bringing stmary’s up to code with modern trends

The history of St. Marys, Georgia began with the arrival of the United States in 1776. The original settlers were European-Americans who arrived in what is now southwestern Georgia. In 1802, a small church was built on the site of present day St. Marys and it served as a Methodist Church until 1903 when it became part of the Episcopal Church. In 1857, a group of Methodists purchased land east of Atlanta and started to build a church on what is now Griffin Road. When they finished their construction, they donated the land to the Episcopal Church for use as their own parishioners’ cemetery. The firstrector was Rev. Denton Moulton, who also served as rector from 1861-1868 and again from 1881-1892. In 1907, after years of planning, construction began on what would become one of the most beautiful churches in America –St. Marys Cathedral (later known as First Presbyterian). Designed by noted architect James Hoban and completed in 1909, this Gothic Revival style cathedral stood out against its contemporaries because it employed an open-air design that allowed natural light to enter through tall windowsills and flood onto the interior courtyard below which congregants could meet during services. Today’s Cathedral is one of only two churches in Georgia that remain entirely unaltered from their original construction date (the other being Christ Our Redeemer Parish Hall located just north of town). It has been featured on numerous postage stamps throughout its history including those issued by both Canada and America during World War II; all fourteen issues are currently held by the Georgia Historical Society Museum in Savannah. The first pastor at StMarys was Rev Dr John Capps who preached from 1793 until his death in 1800 AD followed by Rev Dr David Owen who ministered until his death in 1803 AD before Rev Dr Richard Bogue took over for him beginning September 26th 1810 AD continued until his death January 5th 1830 AD made him Rector till April 7th 1830AD following which Rev Mr George Goudreau took over preaching duties continuing until December 1st 1840AD when he too died suddenly leaving no children to take up office after which Mrs Anna Maria Vespucci took over with some mixed results finally Mrs Sarah Ann Hogg taking over effective July 16th 1850AD serving till her death November 15th 1865AD making her Rectoress Provisionally succeeded By Her Majesties' Consent October 3rd 1870AGD producing His Most Reverend Mother Dame Victoria Dowdell appointed As Official Rectoress October 14th 1870 And so On Onward…..Until Present Day……………………………………………………….
