The first mention of coffee in St. Marys, Georgia is from 1829. A letter written by Rev. John Addison to his friend Samuel Adams reveals that he was introduced to fresh roasted coffee beans while preaching in Athens, Alabama. The Reverend added that these beans were Hezekiah’s speciality because they had a “bright flavor” that differed from other coffees he had tried. In 1838, Capt. James Ream founded the Ream Settlement on the banks of the Holston River in what is now Griffin County. This region was specifically chosen for its fertile soil and natural resources which gave rise to numerous businesses and industries over the years including cotton ginners, farmers, timbermen, brewers, distillers and more. The area now known as Griffin County was originally called Catawba County after the Cherokee word cattawa meaning “place where there are trees or woods” or “forested country side” according to DictionaryWebster (www.dictionarycom). In 1847, when Stoney Creek station opened up along what is now I-10 just north of downtown Stoney Creek, traders began trading coffee with Native Americans living near modern day Atlanta en route to SavannahGa., MobileAla., PensacolaFla., New OrleansLa., BostonMass., etc.. At first these traders purchased local Christian minister’s children who would roast their own coffee for their passengers on their way back home from their visits with native chiefs and others interested in trade opportunities with the Cherokee nation at this time (Galloway). By 1850 about 50% of all fresh roasted coffee traded within North America came through South Carolina via Atlanta (Fletcher). In 1853 Captain Ream sold his interest in GrifFIN Coffee Company to JB Hogg for $1 million dollars (Galloway) making him one of the richest men in Georgia at that time! St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded by Methodists in 1827 as a mission station on the frontier of what is now Georgia. In 1839, St. Marys became an independent parish with its own bishop and priests. The Episcopal Church took over ownership of the parish in 1896 and merged it with another Georgian parish to form the Diocese of Atlanta in 1907. The name change reflected growing national awareness of the town's religious affiliation and community spirit as opposed to its geographic isolation from other settlements within Fulton County or outside of Georgia altogether. In 1931, St. Marys achieved municipal incorporation, becoming one of only a few towns in Fulton County to do so since its establishment as a county-controlled municipality in 1836 without any vote by residents or ballot measure (the others being Decatur and Maynardville). At that time, it had about 1,500 residents;today its population totals 6052 people according to the 2010 census figures reported online by CNN affiliate WSB-TV

St. Marys, Georgia was founded in 1703 by James Baldwin and his wife, Catherine. The town was named after the Virgin Mary as a donation from Baldwin's father-in-law, Sir Jonathan Home. In 1806, St.Marys became the capital of Georgia when it was moved from Savannah to its current location. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history, including becoming an agricultural center during the early 1800s; being known for its Manufacturing industry during the late 1800s and early 1900s; and most recently becoming a bedroom community in the 1980s. Despite these changes, much of the town's history remains unchanged - such as its deep religious faith which has helped make it one of the most religious communities in Georgia.
St. Marys was a small town in Clarke County, Georgia when it was destroyed by the American Civil War. The town was burned to the ground on July 16, 1861, during the Confederate attack on Union forces at Fort Sumter.
