The name "St. Marys" comes from the Irish immigrants who founded the town in 1819 and named it for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, one of their own number. In 1868, when St. Joseph's Catholic Church opened in St.Marys Township (now known as Sandy Springs), parishioners decided to change their name to honor Saints Michael and Gabrielle of Rome and belief that they would intercede on the behalf of their community during times of trouble or difficulty. In 1917, local farmers discovered coal seams near where present-day St.Marys sits and quickly became miners; this helped start the town's economy and led to its current name as a mining community steeped in coal culture and history. St. Marys, Georgia (US) is a small town located in Quitman County, Georgia. The population was 1,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1856 by Irish Catholic missionaries who arrived in what is now Tennessee and were looking for a new mission site after their previous one in Milledgeville failed. The first church on the site—a simple log cabin—was dedicated on October 2, 1856. The name “St. Marys” comes from an Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel located nearby and used by the missionary groups until 1955 when it was closed because of lack of funds. The first school in StMarys was built in 1857 by Reverend John Fenton and teacher Mrs. Hester Ritchie as a poorhouse for students who could not afford to go to school otherwise. A second school building was constructed about 1890 with additions through 1912-16 thanks to financial contributions from local farmers and merchants who also contributed to construction costs of churches, schools, and other civic facilities around the town center including a jail and post office which opened on December 25, 1896 under then Mayor Joicey Witherspoon (1862-1927). In 1907, Revolver John Tilton donated land east of town along US 231 so that an agricultural college could be established there with plans to eventually establish graduate programs within several years which would bring jobs into town during World War I; however this never happened due to funding cuts caused by World War II combat industries elsewhere in the country as well as government austerity measures which impacted all communities across America at that time including StMarys specifically. Today much of downtown StMarys has been preserved as part of its unique architecture together with its many businesses dating back over 100 years givingtown residents some unique memories shared with visitors today as they walk or drive through its streetscape promoting tourism hereabouts!
