St. Marys is a small town located in Butler County, Georgia, United States. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by Methodists in 1836 and named after the patron saint of Hungary, St. Mary of Hungary. It has an active church and elementary school system which serve the area around the village center. The name of the parish comes from an event that took place in 1792 when General Andrew Jackson was routed by French forces near what is now St. Marys Parish on his way to battle at Yorktown Battlefield. After General Jackson's retreat, a group of Methodist Episcopal nuns caring for wounded soldiers found themselves surrounded by French troops while they cooked dinner on a rise overlooking the battlefield. To escape capture, they ran into a nearby wood and hid behind some trees until nightfall when they made their escape back to safety with supplies and permission from France to return home safe and sound. In 1836, Methodism began establishing churches all over Georgia including one in St.Marys Parish where Rev John Bledsoe officiated as first minister alongside Rev George Whitefield who came from Boston (USA). As early as 1840 there were two schools operating within this small village-one for girls (the present dayelementary school) and one for boys (the present day high school). The town of St. Marys, Georgia was founded in 1828 by the parents of George Washington Parish. The parish was named for the main church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which had been destroyed by a fire. The first pastor of George Washington Parish was Father James McNamara, who arrived in 1827. A school and a post office were established within the first year of the parish’s establishment and began receiving mail from outsideGaithersburg. In 1830, Father McNamara built a chapel on the site of what is now known as Main Street to serve his parishioners. In 1832, Father McNamara erected a second church on land adjacent to his original building and dedicated it to Our Lady of Guadalupe. This new church served as the parish’s primary Church until 1864 when it became absorbed into George Washington Parish. During that time, St. Marys experienced many challenges due to its small population and lack of resources. However, through prayer and faithful service, the community managed to overcome these obstacles and grow stronger together over time. In 1840, two brothers—John Fenton and John Gist—founded Fentonville Baptist Church in nearby Lawrenceburg while attending seminary at Vanderbilt University (now Vanderbilt University Medical Center). They soon realized that they needed an area for their congregation to worship so they located theirchurch on Cemetery Road just south of town limits in 1850-51 under the direction of Reverend John Hargrave (1802-1886). After several years preaching services outbuildings near present day Court House Square (then called “The Square”), they erected their current buildings there in 1861-62 with support from Mrs. Anna McKay Tucker (died 1865). Their church remained active until it merged with First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceburg effective January 1st 1907 pursuant to an Act Of Congress That provided for such mergers among “congregations or branches thereof [that] are organized separately but have united with one denomination therein since its organization”2
The first European settlement in St. Marys was by the French in 1763. The town was named after Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus. The first store was built in 1768 and the first post office was established in 1769. In 1827, a school was started and continued until 1895. A courthouse was built in 1828 and a jail opened in 1830. A cotton gin and three mills were constructed in 1835-1836 and an additional mill operated from 1840 to 1845. The town became a village on December 1, 1860. On November 16, 1865, a fire destroyed all of the buildings within the limits of the village plus some houses about two miles east of it on River Road. On September 10, 1870, a general store opened with $5 worth of goods being sold
