As the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps, St. Marys has a rich marine history dating back to before the Civil War. The town was first settled by German immigrants in 1820 and soon became a center for fishing and shipping. By 1860, St. Marys had become an important seaport with its own shipyard and wharf. During the Civil War, St. Marys played a key role as an military base and port on the Chattahoochee River. Many Marines were trained here and fought in the Confederate army. In 1865, after Georgia was lost to Union forces, most of the marines left for home but a few continued to serve in Georgia until Reconstruction ended in 1868. Since then, many local businesses have been based on maritime trade including seafood dealers, boatbuilders and harborside restaurateurs who specialize in seafood dishes from around the world served aboard their vessels or at their restaurants overlooking Savannah’s riverfront skyline (and now also under construction). Many residents continue to work in these industries as well as contribute to local charities related to maritime issues such as Amnesty International or No More Deaths (NOD), both founded by locals working at marine terminals during Coast Guard corruption scandals that erupted throughout 2013-15 across multiple US ports serving large numbers of undocumented immigrants(1). Some of these businesses are still active today despite federal prosecutions alleging widespread bribery inside America’s largest commercial harbor; some have closed while others are dealing with tough competition from more recent arrivals looking for opportunities near major metropolises like Atlanta or Houston without havingto deal with Clearwater Harbor behind them (2). St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in metro Atlanta that is known for its beautiful churches and historical landmarks. The town was founded in 1827 by Methodists who arrived from England. It became a parish in 1854, and now has a population of around 10,000 people. The religious community that founded St. Marys was called the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1853, the church moved to what is now the north side of town and began to build a new church. The first building was completed in 1865 and named after the mother of Jesus Christ, St.Mary Magdalene. The second building was completed in 1868 and named after another saint, St.John Wesley. Today, there are many different denominations operating within the Anglican Communion as well as other religions such as Islam and Judaism that have been worshipping at St. Marys for years before it became an official Parish on July 1st 1978 with jurisdiction over all of south Fulton County including parts of northeast Cobb County and northwest Gwinnett County! The history of this small town goes back to 1827 when Methodists came from England to establish worship hereabouts – thus fulfilling one mission- “To Spread Christianity through Preaching” (Church History Society Journal). And so it has always been – with warm hearts, friendly hands & heartfelt friendships among us!

The Marine Gift History project was initiated in 2000 by the National Museum of American History as a research and educational initiative to document the history,origin and significance of marine gifts. The project has grown over time to include contributions from museums around the United States and abroad.
In 1845, the population of St. Marys was only 5 people. In 1853, when the town was founded and it became a part of Georgia, it had a population of 25 people. By 1870, the population had grown to 100 people and by 1890 it had reached 150 people. The growth in the town was due to its location on the Savannah River and because of its importance in shipping trade. The town also grew because it became an agricultural center with many businesses involved in agriculture such as grocery stores, feed mills, and cotton ginners. The most important business in St. Marys during its early years was The Central Railroad Company which carried goods from Augusta to Savannah. Other important businesses through the years include J H Keyes & Son Millinery which manufactured silk stockings for women; W C Seward AG Wholesale Grocery which sold groceries including meat, flour, eggs, butter and milk; P G Stephenson Coal & Coke Works which produced coal for export; J N Kittrell Bank which opened in 1892; Griggs Hardware store which continued operations until 1957; Anna B Ellis Funeral Home where services were held for many famous residents of St. Marys including Governor Slaton and President Franklin D Roosevelt
In 1814, St. Marys was founded as a French mission in what is now Georgia. The first pastor was Father Jacques Challe. After the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius of Antioch in 1829, the church was abandoned and used as an ammunition dump. In 1850, the mission was reactivated and Fr. Jean-Baptiste Moreau became pastor. In 1872, a new chapel was built on the site of the old ammunition dump and named after St. Mary’s Hill (an mountain in central Georgia). The parishioners were served by two priests until 1925 when they united with nearby Allatoona to form part of the Diocese of Atlanta (later called Episcopal Church USA).
