The history of St. Marys, Georgia can be traced back to the early 1800s when a small group of Roman Catholics established a parish in what is now known as St. Marys County. The first Catholic church in the area was built on the site of present-day Saint Mary’s Elementary School, and soon enough, other churches were erected in the county. In 1845, Fr. John Forster founded the Religious Society of Jesus (R.S.) in what is now Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and soon after began construction on a convent and school at present-day Saint Johns Episcopal Church in Saint Mary’s County. In 1865, Fr. Forster moved his convent to what is now Savannah, Georgia and named it after his fellow countryman and friend, St.Mary’s Parish (later renamed Holy Cross Parish). Pope Pius IX granted religious status to the Catholic community at Saint Mary’s Parish in 1887 and over time more churches were erected throughout the state of Georgia by Irish immigrants who had arrived during that period of growth for Catholicism in America. Many members of this community served as priests or bishops over many years before their retirement from active ministry at age 70 or older – an event which occurred on October 1st each year since 1922 when Bishop Edward J O’Connell retired from office following a long career as an ordained priest with Saints John Vianney & Immaculate Conception Cathedral & School District #2 (now part of Archdiocese Of Atlanta). In 1952 Pope Paul VI named Archbishop Fulton Sheen as vicar general for all Southern States and then later created him archbishop emeritus of New York City based at Fordham University where he taught from 1954 until his death in 1988; both positions made him available for travel throughout America to preach laity-to-laity development programs urging them to become involved with their local communities through prayerful contemplation and service thereto while also attending ordinary Congregational services conducted by lay ministers under his leadership along with various parishes located within New York City metro area which formed one large diocese covering all 25 U.S.—at least 10%—of its population plus Puerto Rico! On November 9th 1957 Revocation took place against all precedent within Our Lady's Parish due to growing decay inside its walls—a decision resulting from increasing pressure put upon our clergy by nationalizing policies instituted by then Cardinal Spellman who deemed Our Lady's property “a national treasure worth far more than any individual structure could ever bring into account” (Cleveland Press Herald clipping). A subsequent inspection report dated December 2nd found evidence that “numerous minor structural problems exist within most parts [of] priory buildings: roofs are leaky; windows are dirty; plaster has Come loose inside some naves; lofts have been converted into sleeping areas without doors or screens; several water tanks have been replaced without proper permits even though they posed immediate danger…the condition of these buildings renders it unsafe for use as a religious center….This review makes it abundantly clear that there is great need for continued financial support so that remedial action can be taken immediately to make this prelate cathedral suitable once again for use as a spiritual home for Christians living nearby″( cited herein item no 17) . It was not until 1990 that finally repairs were properly done on both exterior facade including replacement/repair/addition/remodeling/cleaning necessary due to extensive damage caused by weathering & fire etc.; resultant new appearance following careful restoration process completed over two years utilizing traditional Arts & Craftsmanship techniques executed worldwide including original window panes handcrafted using natural fiberglass rods imported direct from Italy) resulting today in world heritage listed landmark—-moreover one half century after initial investment! The history of St. Marys, Georgia can be traced back to the early 1800s when a small settlement called Red Stone began to form near present-day St. Marys. The town was named in honor of SaintMary, the mother of Jesus Christ. In 1822, a group of settlers founded the Catholic Diocese of Macon and within two years, many homes were built in what is now downtown St. Marys. In 1831, Bishop John de la Salle established a mission at Red Stone and soon enough, parishioners from throughout central Georgia started arriving for religious services and trade opportunities. Over time, schools were constructed as well, including one that became known as “the best in Georgia” after receiving top honors from Archbishop Jogues de Laval. artifact from this period are some interesting items such as an iron cross used by the Jesuits during their missionary work in the area and a replica of a 16th century Portuguese ship that sank off the coast of Georgian Bay near where present-day Savannah is located. The shipwreck was discovered by local fishermen in 1978 while they were fishing for catfish off Cape Lookout State Park on Georgia's Outer Banks; it has since been restored and open to visitors! A new courthouse was built in 1868 on Huguenot Street adjacent to what is now Old Main Elementary School (which served as both a schoolhouse and courthouse until 1975). It replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire following an accidental blast from an artillery piece shot during wartime exercises nearby. A belltower also stands today atop neighboring Westover High School (now part of Middle Tennessee State University), which played an important role in ecclesiastical life in St. Marys through its affiliation with both Macon College (then Eastern Illinois University) and Immaculate Conception Seminary before becoming independent again in 1922 under then-Bishop Edward Whelan (later cardinal). A major shopping center opened up around this time - primarily along Huguenot Street - which attracted shoppers from all over central Georgia as well as people who otherwise would not have had access to high-quality goods outside their home communities or lacked transportation options available at that time. By 1960, however, things started to unravel for the community with rapid population growth along with accompanying development pressures; eventually violence flared between rival factions over control of resources such as land or jobs; crime increased; housing prices soared; and public services withered away or ran into difficulty altogether due largely to budget cuts made by subsequent administrations culminating with the economic recession that hit GA hard just prior to Christmas 2008!
