Military gift history in St. Marys, Georgia began with the arrival of the American forces in 1864. The town was then known as Uniontown and was part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1868, General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his cavalry unit came into town on their way to rob a bank. When they were stopped by Confederate soldiers, Forrest gave them a bad reputation and ordered them not to come back. A year later, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in St. Marys with his army and started another war for control over the Tennessee Valley area. He found plenty of targets in Uniontown- primarily businesses that sold supplies to the military- so he decided to burn down one of these stores instead. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the end for St. Marys because it destroyed many homes and businesses and made it very difficult for residents to get food or materials needed for their livelihoods. In 1870, Colonel James Waco brought over some settlers from Texas who wanted to set up a farming colony on what is now Fort Worth County Cricket Field Road (now US 64). They named their settlement Ft. Worth after President Ulysses S Grant’s home state in America (Grant had been elected president during this time). When word got out about this new community, people from all over started showing up looking for land and property that could be purchased or given away free if they agreed to move closer to Ft. Worth proper- most notably General Sherman himself who offered 6000 acres of land near present day Arlington Cemetery free if anyone moved there along with his family members (this offer was turned down). In 1875, local officials organized a militia unit called “The Rangers” which was meant as an internal security force in response to increasing crime rates in downtown StMarys (at this time it looked like things were goingto stay bad for awhile). One night around midnight someone threw a stone through a window at one of the local businesseson Main Street and soon thereafter began fires throughout downtown including several churches which caught fire due to smoke coming from inside (the firefighters did an amazing job saving those buildings but unfortunately lost many lives during these events)). This led Congresswoman Elizabeth Cady Stanton (one of the founders of Planned Parenthood)to ask President Rutherford B Hayes whether or not he would provide financial assistance so that these institutions could be rebuilt rather than burned down again; Hayes said yes but only if they built a fence around their premises instead of allowing people access without being able to do anything about it! This incident is often cited as one reason why abortion became legal in America after passage of The Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade decision which legalized abortion nationwide starting on November 6th1973- making StMarys one of just two places in America where such law had been put into effect! In 1880, Captain John Pemberton founded Juglar Oil Company located on current day Burnsville Road outside city limits; within 5 years Juglar was selling oil products door-to-door! This company became very successful and eventually bought out Pemberton’s original partners who left him with nothing!. Shortly afterwards Captain Pemberton died suddenly while traveling westward across Canada; some believe he contracted tuberculosis when living near Edmonton Alberta at this time! In 1802, St. Marys was founded by Father James Garrick as a mission for the Episcopal Church in Georgia. The first church was built on the present site of the courthouse in 1809. In 1822, St. Mary's was elevated to a parish and renamed after Mother of God, the patroness of Georgia.
