The navy gift history in St. Marys, Georgia is a long and winding one. One of the earliest naval gifts to the town was a ship, The USS Constitution, in 1801. The ship was donated by Commodore John P. Morgan and his wife, Lydia Cushing Morgan. In 1814, The USS Constitution again came to St. Marys as a Naval vessel when it was donated by Commodore James Wilkinson during the War of 1812. This time, the gift went to Captain William Fenton who sailed it into town on December 12th, 1814 after departing from Montreal Canada with supplies for General Andrew Jackson’s army invading Tennessee that winter. In 1861, Confederate warships were added to the navy fleet when they were purchased from the British Admiralty at an auction in London England. These vessels were known as CSS Alabama and CSS Georgia and served with distinction during the American Civil War until their surrender at Yorktown Heights on April 9th 1865. Many of these ships were sunk or captured by Union forces during this time but some managed to escape destruction and continued serving within our navy until their decommissioning in 1922-1923. Today there are still naval vessels remaining within our navy thanks in part to donations from private individuals and businesses alike- such as The USS Constitution Museum which opened its doors in 1980 - making St Marys one of only two U.S.-owned Naval museums worldwide (the other being Navy Yard Boston). There are also regular ceremonial visits by our own navy vessels (e.g., USNS Savannah) as part of events celebrating special occasions such as National Fleet Week or Armed Forces Day- all while visitors can enjoy fine dining aboard one of our many naval units includingUSS Enterprise (CVN 69),USS Lexington (CVN 66),USS Porter (DD 753),USS Sims(DE 10) or USS Theodore Roosevelt(CVN 71). And don’t forget about those pesky “naval municipals” like Saint Petersburg harbor - home base for over 100 different warships belonging both Our Navy & Coast Guard fleets!

This rapid growth is due largely to two factors: firstly Saint Mary’s boasts excellent schools; secondly its location within easy commuting distance from downtown Atlanta allows for continued Orlando-based business owners (and visitors)to locate here without having too much trouble finding affordable housing outside of town limits! St. Marys, Georgia is a small town located in the suburban area of Athens, Georgia. It was founded in 1820 by Anglican missionaries and Catholics. The town motto is "Nemo me impune lacessit." In 1868, St. Marys became an Episcopal parish and in 1896 it became part of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Today, the population of St. Marys is about 1,500 people and its economy is centered around agriculture and commerce. The community has a strong Catholic presence with services being offered from 7 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturdays. There are also weekly mass services held at 10 am in the Parish Hall which seats about 50 people.
In 1802, Captain James Cook and his crews discovered the islands of St. Marys and Santa Cruz in the Georgia Strait. The area was at that time part of Spanish America and was under British rule. In 1806, a group of Englishmen set out to claim the islands as their own. They named them after Saint Mary (or María) of Scots-Irish extraction who had been martyred for her faith in Jesus Christ. The first settlement on Santa Cruz Island was made by Captains John Smith and William Clark in 1807. Soon afterwards, other Englishmen arrived with grants from the Crown to form more permanent settlements. From these initial discoveries, the islands became a key resource for resources such as lumber, fisheries, gold and silver mining, and agriculture.
