Saint Marys is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 498 at the 2010 census. The name is taken from the patron saint of England,Mary. Saint Mary's Episcopal Church and rectory are located in the town. St. Marys was founded in 1828 by Reverend Samuel Wade, who arrived with his family from Ohio. Wade purchased two hundred acres (120 hectares) of land east of present-day downtown Saint Marys and built a chapel on it. He named the chapel after his patroness, Queen Mother Maria Theresa of Austria (1795-1846). In 1834, Wade erected a schoolhouse and cemetery on his farmstead for students attending nearby Cobb College. In 1840 he donated land to build a Methodist church which became known as First Methodist Church of St.Marys. By 1865, however, First Methodist had merged with Second Presbyterian Church to form Third Presbyterian Church; Third Presbyterian acquired additional property west of Third Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues until 1892 when it moved to its present location on Park Avenue east of Main Street; that building now houses part of Historic SaintMarys Museum (www2/historicstmarysmuseum/.). In 1870 Revd John Ransom came to St.Marys from Sparta in Lumpkin County and began preaching services there under the leadership of Jno Atherton (1800-1872), one of Methodism's founders and first missionaries overseas. After two years in Stoney Creek Township near Augusta he composed an address entitled "AAddress to All Saints' Parish" dated October 5th 1870 which was read before an assembly at Second Presbyterian Chapel whereupon he announced his intention to establish this parish within Lumpkin County if possible but found no response thereto so he decided to move forward alone with local support only having 10 men available instead thereof increasing our number commitmentarily every other week using personal resources we raised well over $1000 becoming self-supporting through various means including selling eggs etc keeping poultry & vegetables out side doors daily during Advent season paying subscriptions also raised money thru subscription process then applying for charter granted by Bishop Hinton which approved November 15th 1871 becomingFirst African American Episcopal Parish within Georgian Province being chartered by Bishop Augustus Manningham [now pastor] September 3rd 1872 soon afterwards celebrated first anniversary saints day January 2nd 1880 moved into new building on park avenue NW corner Mainstreet www3/firstafricanamericanepiscopalparrishmentsvillage/. The following year during Reconstruction efforts were made available free blacks could worship freely without fear or discrimination thanks largely to bishop Manningham& his endeavors founding black churches throughout Georgia both Protestant & Catholic as well as Congregationalist synagogue also established schools white & colored children taught together6 years later prior prohibition against owning Negroes repealed resulting in large influx beginning again great wave migration1960+ giving us today total population over 1000 people
