The United States Army deployed a gift to Suwanee, Ga. on Dec. 10, 1864 as part of the Union army's effort to help General and Mrs. William H. Sherman's march through Georgia and into Tennessee. The gift was an artillery piece, which was donated by Major General George Custer of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, U.S.A. The regiment had fought in the Civil War and had been disbanded but was reactivated in 1865 as part of the Reconstruction process in America following the war. The 7th Cavalry Regiment (Custer's Own) had been raised in Missouri specifically for service in the Confederate States of America (CSA). After helping lead Union forces against Confederate troops at Vicksburg (Mississippi), General Custer led his regiment north to Suwanee where it would join Sherman's march through Georgia and Tennessee that began on December 10th, 1864. On Christmas day, 1862, General Custer's regiment arrived in Savannah, Ga., after spending two months traveling from Missouri via Nashville and Chattanooga to arrive there on October 12th 1861; they were not present at Fort Sumter when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on April 12th 1861 creating The United States Army! On July 5th 1863, Lt Col James Jumper American Expeditionary Force landed at MarseillesItaly disembarking 1st Brigade 2nd Division under command of Brigadier General John Pope en route to Naples Italy with supplies for Gen Robert E Lee's army besieging Rome - this event is known as "Pope's Campaign." Suwanee, Georgia is a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia that is located on the Suwanee River. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The land that makes up Suwanee was first settled by Creek Native Americans in what is now Suwanee County in 1793-94. A post office called Suwanee was established in 1827, and it remained in operation until 1964. The name "Suwanee" comes from the Cherokee word "swaan" meaning "coastal stream." The first store in Suwanee opened on July 3, 1906, and the first school opened for students on October 5, 1907. The community's economy began to develop with a sawmill being built in 1912 and a cotton gin being built soon thereafter. By 1914, there were three churches and two stores serving the community of about 100 people. As businesses developed, so did social activities such as dances and picnics which helped to keep residents close together during times of economic stress or when new residents wanted to join an existing community. In 1951, Interstate 20 linking metro Atlanta to Athens arrived making Suwannee more accessible; however some businesses refused to open because they did not have business licenses plates proclaiming their disapproval of I-20 signage reading "No Roads No Growth". In response local officials erected signs reading "Welcome ToSuwanee".
