The Boise City Air Force Base was the first USAF base in the state of Idaho. It opened on December 15, 1947 and served as the home for Fighter Squadron (F-5) until it was transferred to Andersen AFB in March 1951. The air force changed its name to Boise Army Airfield on September 12, 1951. In October 1955, the F-6A Tiger jet fighter squadron moved from Andersen AFB to Boise City Air Force Base where it operated from until its move to Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio in 1966. The last USAF fighter squadron stationed at Boise City AFB was the F-15 Eagle squadron which transitioned to jets at Wright-Patterson AFB in 2006. The city of Boise became home to the new Department of Defense’s Central District Command Headquarters (CDHQ) on July 1, 2002 when commands were relocated from Porter County due to budget cuts within DoD. CDHQ is significant because it marks an end of a more than two decades long relationship between DoD and Boise City which began with military construction beginning during World War II and continued through peacetime untilactivated days after 9/11/2001 when DoD decided that centralized command headquarters would be better located closer to combatant commanders throughout America’s military forces. DoD has continued its presence in Boise City through various partnerships including a joint program with Boeing Co., which produces attack helicopters for use by local law enforcement; a cooperative agreement with Mountain Home State University; and a lease agreement with Veterans Affairs Regional Medical Center Valley View Hospital that provides medical care for troops deployed abroad as well as American citizens living within range of their facilities. In addition, an adjacent property owned by Weiser Incorporated has been leased for storage and use by DoD responsible for providing accessorial services such as security and firefighting operations within central district command headquarters complex while also housing the offices of both civilian employees who provide support services within central district command headquarters complex as well as contractor employees who maintain infrastructure inside central district command headquarters complex under terms managed by DoD Agencies consisting principally of Army National Guard Bureau Forensics Laboratory, Civilian Law Enforcement Officers Training School (CLEOTS), United States Customs Service field office serving Douglas County - Douglas Mesa, National Guardsmen Reserve training center serving Allouche County - Jerome Lake and other agencies working together under one roof providing worldclass service supported by top notch management
