The Boise City, Idaho Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was activated on October 1, 1917 and served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the war. On November 8, 1919, the Boise City Army National Guard detachment was redesignated as an infantry battalion and assigned to the 5th Infantry Division. It remained in that capacity untilactivated on September 15, 1951 as part ofthe activation ofthe United States Armed Forces in Korea. The battalion served in South Korea for nine years before being demobilized on July 26, 1957. From its inception until it was disbanded in 1957, the Boise City Army National Guard detachment operated as a reserve component of III Corps' battle-tested 7th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). This unique relationship allowed for continuous training and development of brigade combat teams within III Corps while also providing support to Active Duty units through rotations with other units located throughout II Corps Headquarters Area Command - Hawaii and Okinawa. IV Corps Battle Force Commander Lieutenant General Michael Tatham orderd The Battalion into active duty status effective September 15, 1951 as part of United States Armed Forces plans for Operation Pegasus which aimed to remove all Korean War forces from South Korea by September 25. On December 15, 1960 elements ofthe battalion joined 106th Airborne Division during their deployment southward across North Korea towards Seoul where they would later fly into action against North Korean communist forces at Inchon Bay. For his heroism and courageous leadership during this time period Captain John Witherspoon posthumously received the Distinguished Service Cross which is still displayed at Camp Bowie Air Base Museum today. In 1962 elements were deployed along with 101st Airborne Division airborne assault troops commanded by Major General James Hayslip Jr onto the newly created Republic Of China Chinesepatriots who had fled mainland China after Mao Zedong's successful seizure of power in 1949. After two months long operations these American soldiers helped turn one key strategic point near Pyongyang into an American stronghold resulting in defections from Chinese Communist forces over 100 miles away!
