Boise City is a city in the Boise County, Idaho, United States. The population was 59,371 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Boise County. The first permanent settlement in what is now Boise City was made on July 3, 1892 by J.D. Merrill and his party from San Francisco as part of a wagon train bound for the Rocky Mountains. This small town began to grow rapidly due to its location within easy reach of both an agricultural area that produced hay and flour, and a railroad line that transported goods to towns in Nevada and Oregon. In 1907, the city was incorporated as a borough under the name "Boise". In 1912, Boise City annexed the unincorporated communities of McClellan and Westmoreland which had been established along similar routes by settlers moving out from eastern Idaho Springs and Lewiston during the gold rush years. On November 8 of that year, voters approved annexation into Boise City with a population of 397 residents; this number would only increase after it became clear that there were already too many people living in Rapid City (then just outside of downtown) and Cripple Creek (just east of downtown), both located on major transportation corridors then providing access to Boise City's landowning elite for entertainment purposes only. As time passed though; businesses moved away from rural areas towards city limits; streets were widened; new housing developments were built; schools were built; services such as water or sanitation were added; streets renamed...the list goes on!
