Lewiston is a town in Idaho, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Lewiston is on the American River, about 20 miles (30 km) east of Boise and 30 miles (48 km) north of Pocatello. It is part of the Custer County seat. The town was founded in 1872 by John Sutter and named for him, Lewiston being his version of "Leeds" in England. The first store in the town was called the "Cow Palace". In 1879, Wm. Hoyer opened a grocery store which became known as the 'Hoyer's'. Lewiston had its first post office in 1886. The 'Lewiston Daily News' began publication in 1898 and lasted until 1907. Lewiston also became home to two mining camps; one near what is now Interstate 85 and another about three miles east along US-6 near today's junction with I-85/US-6 (now known as milepost 26). Mining operations ceased around 1905 but some relics from those days can still be seen today including an old blast furnace used to produce coal for local residents and a number of mining claims that have been preserved as historical sites within Lewiston's boundaries since then - most notably Claim 9 which has been occupied by employees of Pacific Gas & Electric Company since 1951 when it merged into ExxonMobil Gulf Corporation In 1924, lumber baron Joplin Lumber Company established its mill here producing high quality lumber products until it closed down in 1984 due to competition from cheaper imports from Asia. At one time there were over 100 businesses operating out of Lewiston including a small hotel, several restaurants, two banks and four news papers including the 'Lewiston Daily News'. Today only a few storefronts remain remaining from this once vibrant community while much of downtown has gone up in flames over the years due to arson or neglect making it difficult to explore any further than Main Street which remains largely unchanged despite all these changes
