In 1947, the USAF was founded and its first unit was activated at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona. The United States Air Force's first squadron was called the 1st Fighter Squadron (1FS). It consisted of a single F-104 Starfighter. The USAF remained activated untilactivated on September 15, 1949 when it merged with the Marine Corps to form the Marine Corps Air Ground Forces. The 1FS became part of redesignated squadrons which were based at different bases within the Marine Corps area of responsibility as follows: Vandenberg AFB, California; Midway Island Naval Base, Hawaii; Quantico Naval Base, Virginia; Iwo Jima Naval Base, Japan; and Eglin AFB Florida. The planes were used for training and security purposes until 1978 when they were replaced by the Boeing 737-800. In 1984, the military donated an F-15 Eagle fighter jet to the base. It was operated as a primary airframe simulator before being retired in 2006. The next year, in 1987, Lewiston AFB gifted an E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft to serve as a command center for US forces in Afghanistan. It is currently Operated by Avionics Squadron 5 at Lackland AFB, TX.
Lewiston is a small town in Idaho, United States. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boise metropolitan area. Lewiston is located on the Snake River and its economy is based largely on agriculture and ranching. Lewiston was founded by Mormons in 1873 as a farming community on the banks of the Snake River. The first post office opened in 1875, and the town was named after Thomas Lewin, an early settler who had donated land for the community. The Lewiston School District was formed in 1907 and has since grown to include more than 120 schools across six counties in central Idaho. Lewiston's downtown core contains several buildings dating from around World War II: a military airbase QM2 which served as an auxiliary airstrip for bomber flights during World War II; a firehouse built to withstand aerial bombing raids; and two churches—the First Presbyterian Church ( Built 1915 ) and Bethel Lutheran Church (Built 1925)—both of which are still standing today. operation of Lewiston's waterworks began in 1905 when local farmers established what became known as "The Wellness Center." Today, Lewiston Water District provides drinking water to more than 3900 customers within its five jurisdictional areas including Delta County, Payette County, Bonneville County, Clearwater County, and Rancheria County; manages agricultural irrigation systems that irrigate more than 9000 acres of cotton fields in Ada and Bonneville Counties; delivers trash to more than 105 cities throughout southeastern Idaho; operates three airports serving Lewiston-Athol Airport (LHE), Coeur d'Alene Airport (CPU), Twin Falls Municipal Airport (TWF) as well as I-84/US 20 just east of town limits;and developing new acreage for irrigated cotton production via grants from USDA’s Agricultural Research Service – National Agricultural Library
The United States Air Force (USAF) operates more than 60,000 aircraft and employs more than 134,000 people. Its mission is to make America's defense community the best it can be by providing mobility, firepower, intelligence, and support for our military and its allies. The USAF has a long history of generosity, beginning with World War I when it donated planes to the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Since then, the USAF has given many millions of dollars in gifts to various charities and organizations. One of the most recent examples of USAF largesse was the donation of two C-130 Hercules airplanes to the African Union in 2013. These planes were used as transports during their trip from Cairo to Addis Ababa. The donation was made in commemoration of AFRICA's 50th anniversary as an independent commonwealth. Additionally, in 2014 the USAF gave $10 million to help improve air traffic control systems throughout Africa. This was part of a larger effort called "Eagle eye" which aimed to improve global airspace while reducing pollution and saving lives. In addition to its philanthropic endeavors, the USAF also manufactures electronic warfare systems and other equipments that are vital for our military doctrine and operations. In 1999, it donated eight E-2D Hawkeye airborne early warning aircrafts to NATO member Croatia as part of a project called 'Eagle Eyes'. In 2010, it donated six MH-60M Seahawk helicoptersto Honduras as part of a program called 'Honduras skies' which aimed at improving air security across Central America region
