Lewiston is a small town in Rex County, Idaho, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rex County. Lewiston is located on the Snake River and has a latitude of 44° 10′ N and longitude of 111° 25′ W. The first people to live in Lewiston were Indian scouts who traveled through this area during the 1849-1850 period looking for new land to claim as their own. They found extensive coalitions near present-day Lewiston but decided not to settle there because they could not get good water or enough timber for their homes. A group of Native Americans led by Chief Joseph ordera trader George Simpson to find them some settlement site that would allow them to start living off the land. Simpson came up with the idea of building a trading post on a bluff overlooking the Snake River so he could bring goods and trade with other tribes members along his route from Fort Bridger in Wyoming Territory (now Utah). After many failed attempts, Simpson finally arrived in 1850 and built what became known as Simpson's Trading Post which served as headquarters for his expedition into western Oregon until it was abandoned due to overpopulation about 1852. The first permanent settler in Lewiston was James Jurgenson who built his home on what is now Main Street in 1855 after buying land east of Simpson's Trading Post from Simon sandstone prospector John Fenton Smith. Jurgenson later moved his family westward across State Avenue into what is now downtown Lewiston when he discovered large quantities of coal seams near modern day downtownLewiston In 1861, when Idaho became part of America, Rex County was created from parts of Chinle and Boise Counties including most of modern day Lewiston During World War II, much effort went into manufacturing munitions here such as aluminum cans and airplane parts In 1949,Lewistone voters passed an ordinance authorizing liquor sales within city limits In 1955,the School District #1 merged with School District #2 forming School District #3 which continued operation until 1965 when it merged again with School District #4 creating today’s current School Districts
