Crest Hill is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill was founded in 1868 by settler John P. Hettinger and his wife Emma. It became a village in 1896 and a town in 1908. The name may derive from the crest of an oak tree that stands near the original post office building (now used as a library). The community is located on the east bank of the DuPage River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Chicago and 11 miles (17 km) south-southwest of Rockford. The ZIP code 60514 has been assigned to Crest Hill since 1959. According to the 2010 census, Crest Hill has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 7,902 people, 2,664 households, and 1,953 families residing in the village proper; however these are now combined with other villages within Kane County for statistical purposes. There was also 1 former ghost town located within or immediately adjacent to Crest Hill: Alpine which had no residents between 1850 and 1890 but did have an early post office established there in 1881 which still exists as part of Park Forest Cemeteryigger Road 3A.[2][3] As of 2007–2008,[4] Crest Hill's estimated assessed valuation was $27 million dollars making it one of Kane County's most valuable communities according to Forbes magazine's 2008 list "The 10 Most Valuable Communities In Illinois". Crest Hill is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, located on the brink of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Crest Hill is one of several small communities near Lake Michigan and Dearborn Heights that were founded as part of the Chicago area's new frontier during and after the Civil War. The first settler in Crest Hill was James Haggerty who arrived in 1868 from Maryland. He built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. A post office called Haggerty was established in 1870, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1876, George Wills purchased land at what is now East Maple Road and East First Street for $1,000. Wills renamed his property Crest Hill after his home state of Kentucky which he had visited while visiting family there before moving to Illinois. Crest Hill became a village on February 14, 1886 when it adopted a charter from the county board of commissioners. On May 15th of that year, Mayor Tilton approved plans by Fenton & Sons coal mine operators to add a second story to their plant on West Main Street which would have increased production capacity by 50%. The addition created much controversy as many residents opposed the plan because they felt it would increase traffic congestion around their town center; however, Mayor Tilton argued that with more people coming into town they could offer better services and make money off sales taxes which would be used to improve public transportation within town limits instead of being diverted towards other areas such as Kane County or Will County). One major development that took place during this time period was cresthill High School which opened its doors for students in fall Of 1888 adjacent to then existing Fenton Elementary School (later renamed Prairie View) on South First Street - making CrestHill one of the earliest high schools open in Chicagoland. This school held classes from Pre-K through 12th grade until 1962 when Park Ridge High School opened nearby providing education through 10th gradeinderry to students from east suburban Chicagoland neighborhoods like Glenview and Arlington Heights among other areas across Cook County including Brandon Township (now part of Schaumburg), Mount Prospect Village (now part of Hoffman Estates), Winnetka Woods Village (now parts of Evanston), Lombard Hills Village (now parts of Mundelein), Belmont Shore Village (now partof Winnetka), Schiller Park Towne Center(now Urbana), Crystal Citylea(formerly Orland Park)and Forest Glen(formerly Villa Park). In 2006-2007 renovations began on Crest Hill High School resulting in brand new buildings/grounds along with updated equipment including roofing/maintenance/updates to numerous classrooms/. These also included installation/removalof individual old windows throughout building giving each classroom air conditioning Individually).
