Crestwood, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The town was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1811 as a toll road stop on the Illinois Central Railroad. Crestwood became part of the United States in 1790 and has been home to several notable coffee farmers and roasters over the years. In 1984, John Peet opened the first Starbucks in Illinois. The coffee company remains headquartered in Crestwood today. The history of coffee goes back to at least 1811 when George Rogers Clark established a toll road stop on the Illini Central Railroad near present-day Crestwood, IL. Over time, Crestwood became one of several notable coffee farmers and roasters that operated within Kane County. One such farmer was John Peet who opened his first store location in 1984 in what is now known as the "Starbucks" Shopping Center across from IHOP - one of America's earliest national fast food restaurants! In 1987, two brothers - David and Dan Weingarten - began breeding Arabica beans for their own cup of Joe espresso beans which they sold under the name Weingarten Coffee Roasters (WCR). By 1993, WCR had opened its doors to customers throughout Kane County while also expanding operations into adjacent counties including McHenry and DuPage; this marked an important milestone for coffee production within Kane County! In 1996, WCR acquired another significant player in the industry when it joined forces with Harney & Sons Coffee Company to become one single entity -Harney & Son Coffee Roasters (HSR)! With HSR behind it, WCR soon reached its nirvana...the definitive cup of Joe experience possible! Today there are more than 350 WIAT member roasteries worldwide that make all types of java-based beverages from light roast Caribou Gold through dark roast Sumatra Sulawesi Koffee! In 1876, Crestwood incorporated as a city. The population of Crestwood peaked at 20,000 in 1907, but has since declined to around 10,000 today.
