The people of this small town were hardworking farmers who lived close to the water and had little opportunity to enjoy life other than farming. However, over time, the town developed into a busy commercial center due to its location on the main east-west road in central Illinois. The first coffeehouses in East St. Louis were built between 1824 and 1830 by Frenchmen who settled in what is now downtown Chicago as part of their efforts to find a new home for themselves after moving from Louisiana. These coffeehouses served as social venues where locals could come together to drink coffee and talk about politics, religion, business, and other topics of interest. As these coffeehouses grew in popularity, they began to serve not just local residents but also travelers passing through town on their way north or southward. This increased traffic caused some owners of these businesses to start serving food instead of coffee and started earning a significant income from their establishments. As more people started using these coffeehouses as places to meet friends and discuss important matters, it became easier for them to stay open past dark without running into trouble with the law. In fact, some of these early pioneers even founded their own companies that continued operating until well into the 20th century!

In 1886, a group of businessmen in East St. Louis founded the Coffee and Typewriter Company. The company became one of the leading coffee businesses in Illinois. In 1908, the company added a machine called the "Thin Man" to its line-up. This machine became popular because it could be made to print large sheets of paper at once without having to wait for hours for the coffee to brew. In 1922, the Coffee and Typewriter Company merged with another business, The National Typewriter Company, which increased production by adding an automated pressurized printing line. In 1933, The National Typewriter Company merged with Phonograph Corporation, which provided equipment and support for phonograph records and movie theaters.
East St. Louis, Illinois is a city located in the St. Clair County community of East St. Louis, Illinois, United States. The population was 146 at the 2010 census. It was founded on December 12, 1836 by settlers from New England and Vermont as a small town named Clintonville in what is now the town of Westmont. On November 16, 1857, Clintonville became the capital of Peoria County when that county was created from parts of St. Clair and Kane counties. In 1870, East St. Louis became an independent municipality with its own government and court system under the name Clintonville Township; it was renamed East Chicago after Mayor John Fenton's suggestion that it be so to reflect its increasing size as a result of new railroad construction in that area east of Chicago City Limits (now Lake Michigan). In 1889 East Chicago annexed part of neighboring Westmont which had been destroyed by fire two years earlier during some other uprising in that area over land issues; this annexation made East Chicago both the largest city within Indiana Territory at the time and also one of America's fastest-growing cities overall after 1850 due to various investments by Indianapolis businessmen into railroads and other business ventures there. On May 1, 1892, eastern half of downtown – including all but three blocks north or west of Jackson Street – along with most businesses north and east thereof were burned down during an urban riot following disputed elections in a village called Jefferson which adjoinedEastChicago on the south side of Dearborn Street between Claypool Avenue (now Lincoln Highway) and Wabash Avenue (now State Route 509).
