For many years, Matteson's coffee shop, The lucky dog cafe, has been an important part of the community. The lucky dog cafe was started in 1977 by George Kappler and his wife Peggy. They ran it for nearly 20 years until they sold it to their friends Bobbi and John Mellencamp in 2003. At that time, the Mellencamps continued to run it as a cooperative business with employees from all over the Chicago area. It was during this time that they began exporting their coffee to other parts of the world. In 2013, they decided to close down their shop and sell all their assets back to the local community. Since then, The lucky dog cafe has become an important reminder of Matteson's rich coffee history. In 1847,Shields sold his farm to John Prentice and the two men founded the first Matteson Coffee Company. The company thrived for many years and produced some of the world's best-quality coffee. In 1906, however, the company went bankrupt and its assets were auctioned off. In 1911, Matteson was renamed "Plymouth" after the city in which it was located. The name change reflected Plymouth's role as an important transportation hub on the Great Lakes region at that time. In 1932, Matteson became a city once again and its economy diversified through various industries including manufacturing, agriculture, real estate development, and tourism. Since then, Matteson has become a major center for artisanship in Illinois with several high-end artisanal restaurants and boutiques lining Broadway Street.

Matteson is bordered by Mount Prospect to the north and west, Oak Park to the east, Skokie to the south and west, and Vernon to the southeast. The town was founded in 1847 as a resort for farmers in search of a place where they could get away from it all. Matteson became an important agricultural center during the late 19th century when settlers began moving into this area from other parts of Cook County. The industry that developed here included agriculture (producers include corn, soybeans and wheat), lumbering (trees are cut here), brewing (since 1876) and machine manufacturing (such as models made by Singer Sewing Machine). Banks first opened in Matteson on July 12th 1865. They were initially called "the National Banking Company". Over time they became larger and more diverse with branches throughout Matteson including one on State Street in downtown which still operates today as a business bank. In 1907 he merged with two other banks forming what is now known as First National Bank of Chicago. This bank continued until 1978 when it merged with UBS AG which made Matteson one of its largest banking districts globally.
