Matteson, Illinois is a small town in the Quad Cities of northern Illinois. It is home to about 14,000 people and has been called the "Cupcake Capital of the World." The Matteson Coffee Company was founded in 1887 by George Matteson and his brothers. In 1938, it merged with two other coffee companies to form United States Coffee. United States Coffee is still headquartered in Matteson. The Matteson Coffee Company was one of the first coffee companies to sell its beans direct to consumers. In 1912, they started marketing their beans through local newspapers and magazines. In 1951, they opened their own roasting plant and began selling whole bean coffee online. They continue to produce and distribute their beans today. In 1978, United States Coffee merged with another company, Peet's Coffee & Tea Corporation (PEC), which had been founded by Cornelius Peet Sr. PEC is still headquartered in Matteson today along with its subsidiary brands - Peet's Coffeeshops and Starbucks - as well as numerous other businesses across Chicagoland including an auto parts store chain, a candy store chain, a pizza place chain...the list goes on! Matteson is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Matteson is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by Sangamon County to the east, Kane County to the west, and McHenry County to the south. The Village of Matteson was organized on April 6, 1881 from parts of what were then three separate townships: Matteson Township (now Hinsdale), North Matteson Township (now West Side), and South Matteson Township (now Cicero). At its incorporation, Matteson had a total land area of 2 acres (0.8 km²). The first schools in Matteson were built on what are now Park Avenue and Bloomingdale Avenue. In 1902, when Cook Counties merged into Illinois statehood, Mattesson became one of the villages within that new county. On January 1, 1907, all but two blocks of what are now Maplewood Avenue were acquired by Mattesons from John Wafer who had purchased them from General Electric Company for $1 per acre ($/km²). On July 9th that year an act was passed by the State Legislature which provided for annexation of adjacent municipalities by Cook County if they approved it; this annexation never took place because no municipality met those requirements. In 1916-1917 a small piece of land between Maplewood Ave and Elm Street was annexed as part of general growth withinMatteson beyond what had been originally planned as part of annexation to neighboring Chicago suburbia; this addition increased mattesons' total size from 0 acres (0.2 km²) to 4 acres (1 km²). That same year saw also construction began on what would become known as "The Square" or simply "The Square", home to both public school facilities and various businesses which would benefit from their proximity to each other including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant where all manner vehicles were made before being exported overseas for use in World War I, WWII production plants for Pinto products exportation etc.; finally housing developments such as "Duncan Place", later renamed after developer Duncan Meyer's father-in-law who served as Mayor during that time; these developments helped contribute significantly towards increasing property values withinMatteson over time especially given its relatively small size relative to Chicagos larger neighborhoods.. A few years ago there was talk about revamping or demolishing much older sections(eastern half)of downtownMetteson while creating brand new amenities/units overlooking busy 17th St/Lake Michigan with world class views!! This never came true due city financial constraints ?? Instead development happened along lakefront instead with commercial buildings slowly filling in around eastern half?? Which has resulted in negative effects not only on quality Of Life but alsoPublic infrastructureilities like water main breaks etc.? What could have been???

Matteson is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. Matteson is located on the north side of Chicago and is part of the Chicago–Chiari-Morristown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village had a total area of , all of it land. The first settlers to Matteson were Nicholas Romer and his brother Daniel Romer in 1837. They started a farm west of present-day Matteson on the site where now Route 83 meets Interstate 95. In 1844, they sold their farm to John Lattimer and wife Catey for $1,000 dollars. In 1847, Isaac Matthews purchased the farm from John Lattimer for $2,500 dollars. He formed a partnership with two other men—Ezra Winter and George Aiken—to operate the farm as a lumberyard and sawmill. The business prospered until 1876 when it failed due to competition from larger mills owned by brothers Amos Ransom and Alfred Hennepin Jr.. In 1881, Michael McCarthy bought White's Mills from Alfred Hennepin Jr., making Matteson an incorporated village with its own police department (the first in Illinois). By 1886, there were six businesses in Matteson: three livery services (spring feeders), two grocery stores (owned by James Pritchard & Son), one tailor shop (owned by Ezekiel Sennett), one millinery store (owned by Fannie Ewing) and four schools: One elementary school operated by Mr. McCarthy; Two high schools operated by private individuals; and one technical high school which served students up through eighth grade until 1949 when it became Northwestern State High School #1 under then name Northwestern State College District #5 which merged into DuPage Community Colleges district #2 which merged intoIllinois State University district #3 on January 1, 1997). From 1895 until 1959 all but one school were run as public schools administered directly by township trustees rather than elected officials such as town officers or mayor; this exceptions being Northern Illinois Normal School - now known as DePaul University - opened at 7th Avenue North in 1895 also becoming part of Illinois State University district 3 on January 1st 1977 In 1902 George Aiken donated 2 acres east of current day Main Street to be used for residential development called "Matteson Place". This area would eventually become downtown Matteson today . Today many streets that once led to or ran through "Matteson Place" are Still extant including Second Avenue southbound between Wabash Avenue/Lake Shore Drive South & mainstreet eastbound near Northshore Boulevard/Wabash Ave

In 1867, the Matteson Canal was built and increased trade brought new settlers to the area. By 1880, the town had a population of 2,500 people. The first school in Matteson opened in 1892. In 1909, the town enacted a prohibition law which led to social unrest. The Prohibition Era ended with the repeal of Prohibition in 1933. In 1948, Matteson became an independent city and today has a population of over 20,000 people
